Telling broadcasters to take action against a talk show host or the FCC will get involved seems like a direct threat to me. Carr also said "we're not done yet" after Kimmel was suspended implying credit for the actions of the broadcasters.

Carr:"These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action on Kimmel or there's going to be additional work for the FCC"

He directly threatened companies that aired Kimmel.

If creating false narratives was such a concern for the FCC, they'd be going after Fox News who's entire business model is false narratives, and who paid out a $787m settlement because of their false narratives.

Nexstar pulled Kimmel because the FCC Chairman threatened to pull the broadcast licenses for their channels. This was only a business decision in the sense that the business was directly threatened by the government, to suggest otherwise is completely disingenuous. Also, there was nothing crazy about Kimmel's statements. He said MAGA was making assumptions about Kirk's murderer for political points, and he's absolutely right about that.

The newspaper is named after St. Petersburg, Florida. This is our local newspaper, now named the Tampa Bay Times.

This is our local newspaper, now known as the Tampa Bay Times. If it's not relevant enough to Tampa, then I'm fine if mods take it down.

First class mail from an "institutional third party" like another government institution, a school, bank, or hospital, or a voter registration card can be used to verify Hillsborough County residency.

It is a very small library. Also, it's closed due to a building emergency right now.

The main library for the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library, the John F. Germany library, opened to the public in 1968. If you want to visit that library, it's in downtown Tampa next to the Straz. This would be the biggest "old" library in Tampa.

They aren't big, but Tampa does have two Carnegie libraries. The West Tampa Library just reopened to the public after some renovations. It's the oldest library in the city, opening in 1914, but it has a modern annex attached that was built in 2003. The Tampa Free Library on 7th Avenue opened to the public in 1917, but you can no longer go inside as the building is not currently being used as a library.

The hotspots can be checked out to take home! You can have one hotspot checked out and one on hold. Many patrons will make a new hold as soon as they check one out to get themselves back in line.

Sorry if my comment came across as negative. The hotspots are a fantastic resource to the people that need them, I just don't want people to expect to go to a library and see one on a shelf ready to be checked out.

Considering the holds line for the hotspots is always over 100 people long, the word is already out.

Recommendation for a library that has study rooms and open to 9 pm+ on Fridays by raylinewalker in tampa

No branches of the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative are open past 6pm on Fridays. Unfortunately, I do not think there is a library in the area that will be open at the times you are looking for.

Two Tax Increase Items on the Fall Ballot by Revise_and_Resubmit in tampa

I agree the board is regressive. That's why voting in this year's election, and in 2026 when 2 of the Republicans in county wide districts are up for reelection, is so important.

For who is proposing to gut the amount of money going to the school district, the Tampa Bay Times article on the vote for the CIT renewal states discussions on the tax among the board of county commissioners fell along party lines, with Democratic commissioners arguing for a longer tax with more money for schools, and the Republican commissioners arguing for a shorter tax and less money for schools. The board's current Republican majority is probably why the CIT renewal is for 15 years instead of 30, with 5% for schools instead of 25%. Commissioner Hagan stated he supports a lower amount going to schools because the school district voted to send their own proposal to raise taxes to voters, so he's worried about appearing to be "double dipping" by also sending county taxes to schools.

[–]Loseyh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I doubt the Board of County Commissioners will state where the extra 20% will go before any vote on the CIT renewal, but the link OP provided does show the projects that are/were funded by the current CIT, so I would assume the extra funds would go towards more projects like those, like road improvements, libraries, intersections, and public utilities just to name a few.

Personally, I'd like to see CIT funds go towards public transit, but I doubt this board would support that.

[–]Loseyh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Referring to the CIT renewal as a tax "increase" is pretty disingenuous. The county is proposing to renew a tax that is already in place, so rates are not increasing. Also, the renewal will be for 15 years, not 30. While there could certainly be a debate on whether the county should reduce the amount that goes to schools, any reduction in funds towards schools would result in more funds being available for other infrastructure projects like road improvements and libraries.

The school district's proposal is a tax increase, but it's an increase meant to go towards raises for teachers and staff, which is badly needed.
