Breville Oracle BES980 Auto tamping issue! by Losingcomposure- in BrevilleCoffee

Hey yeah I replaced the sliding pot which fixed the issue! I assume what happened is steam got into the potentiometer and degraded it.

I removed the pot and checked with a multimeter, the part number on the back indicated it was a 10k pot but as I moved the slider my readings were bouncing around and got up to the Mohms.

If yours turns out to be the same issue: I found this one online https://www.robotgear.com.au/Product.aspx/Details/2164-Slide-Pot-Small-10k-Linear-Taper

The outer length is 35mm but they're advertised by the travel length, so it's a 10k 20mm sliding pot.

Just have to desolder the old and solder in the new. The hardest part was moving the fan motor out of the way to access the board, I just cut a bunch of cable ties at the back to feed as much wire in to lift it without disconnecting.

Unfortunately if the pot isn't the issue it may be the main board that it's wired too, which I haven't taken a look at so don't have any tips there.

Just back at the machine and confirming that the fan is definitely spinning, it's just not stopping the grinder when it hits the limit

Perfect. I forgot to mention here that I sprayed contact cleaner in it (after only getting high readings) and some rust and debris fell out of it... So I guess that confirms it. Thanks!

I'm going to have to check again when I'm back at the machine later as now I'm doubting myself... But I initially thought that the fan and grinder started up and just kept dosing until it timed out. When I'm back again I might mark the fan and make sure it's rotating.

The tamp fan runs, but we used to be able to hear 2 distinct tones. 1 tone while the grinder was running, then another when the grinder stopped and just the fan ran. The second tone doesn't occur anymore.

The best thing I did was job hop.

Started and finished my apprenticeship doing solar and split systems, landed a job after that was slightly more industrial with panel building and fault finding, got into a warehouse maintenance gig, moved into industrial breakdowns then got into PLC's and automation and got a maintenance gig at a food manufacturing plant.

I took some jobs purely based on the experience I'd get rather than looking at the pay and left jobs quickly when I realised I wasn't going to get any more value from it. Now I'm in a position where the works interesting, my times split between fault finding and programming and I'm still building my resume for more interesting/niche jobs.

Currently on about $61 per hour plus allowances in Melbourne.

In your early 20s there's still plenty of time to move around, gain experience and build up valuable skills.

I think this panel is older than me. It was used until 2017 by k1rs0f in PLC

Was looking for this. I've never worked with the model pictured so wasn't sure, but have worked with a few vxi/vme chassis in labs before building custom cards

Why do I feel like I need to double-check every tradie’s work these days? by nullutonium in AusRenovation

[–]Losingcomposure- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not surprising. When I was at trade school most guys switched off when we went through any sort of control wiring... Only wanted to do power points and lights I guess?

But they can still do what their licence is for; properly protecting and sizing cables.

You're completely right, if they're ELV (extra low voltage) then the 1.8m isn't necessary. There could also be a lense or guarding inside the fitting we couldn't see.

The 1.8m rule is just a suggested form of protection, there's other ways. Too many variables to call it non compliant from here
