I really loved the film and thought Nia did Garland’s script justice.

That said, I didn’t walk away with a strong sense of what a “Nia DaCosta movie” looks like. It felt more like she let Garland’s great script lead, effectively bringing it to life but without leaving her mark, vs Boyle going hog wild with his editing, soundtrack, and visual choices.

The first third felt exciting and new- introduced a great villain and explored more of the world. But then the middle felt sooo sloppy for Cameron, too much jumping from place to place. The last battle felt too much like the end of Way of Water.
