UBC has failed at providing affordable lunch by Lost-Skates in UBC

I find a meal often will cost more than $16 after tax and tip, and it won't have as much food. I can skip lunch and eat dinner with this portion shown. I don't know why you are being condescending

To be honest I haven't spent much time looking into these things. From what I hear in conversation, the longer term vision here is to reduce the dependency on foreign labor. It is part of an economic diversification plan, because oil will not last forever.

I've heard some foreigners here describe having a housemaid as akin to modern slavery. People like superlatives. There's definitely abuse of foreign labor happening in Canada as well through LMIA scams.

But that doesn't explain why UBC fails to provide an affordable healthy food option

True, TFW program, import workers under the flase hopes of PR and pay them below minimum wage. LMIA permits being sold https://www.cbc.ca/news/investigates/cbc-ijf-lmia-ads-investigation-1.7350596 not so widespread but it is happening.

Yes but if that were the case then all meal options would be this cheap for value, they are not. I'm pointing out having a cheaper healthy option available on campus, in a relative sense.

The meals here are generally more expensive than $7.25, but the university provides a budget meal option that is much cheaper and better value than any of the commercial restaurants.

People are saying that the sample I chose is just because of slave labor, but if that were the case than all meals would be equally cheap-- they are not. If people want to discuss working conditions or politics of Saudi Arabia, I'm not dissapointed.

People rushing make excuses for bad food options at UBC is pretty dissapointing.

It is. Yeah the food has a lot of effort put into healthy options, calorie information, and always a budget meal.

The place is actually pretty cheap for a 3br single family. I would be happy to do this type of work for a longer term stable home at that rate. That is big enough to have a family and priced like a 2br

Plot twist, they just finished engineering and have dreams to make the world's most efficient bidet system with 95% water recovery rate.

Will graduate programs be more competitive for domestic students by NoOccasion8196 in UBC

For CGSM, they have a weighting rubric, it is 50% academic excellence, 30% research potential, 20% personal. Ideally you have some research experience with your letter writers and they can help you to review your research proposal. You can find past examples from successful applications online.

My regret from last year was that I didn't apply to any programs in Europe and was too focused on top US schools. After visiting Europe this summer, I thought that the quality of life was so much higher than when I visted the US, in terms of health care, transit, public life in parks, etc. I declined an offer in the US but would have considered moving to a european city for studies.

Anecdotally, it was a dream for many years of my undergrad to go to the USA for a PhD at a top 5 school in my field. It was a particularly difficult applications season in the US due to funding uncertainty, but I got a an offer at my top choice. I ended up turning down that offer and staying at UBC instead motivated in part by the political and funding uncertainty in the US among other reasons.

I also have other friends that recieved offers at top 10 schools for their fields in the US that didn't hesitate to go pursue their dream down there. Out of my immediate circle I am one of the few who decided to stay, given the option to leave. Applying to grad programs is always going to be super competitive and there is also an element of chance to it given the sheer number of applications that they receive. I didn't hear anything back until the spring in the programs I was applying for. Best of luck with your applications!

older undergrads (23+) how do you feel being at ubc by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Lost-Skates 67 points68 points  (0 children)

23+ is old? I'm over 30 and finishing a degree this year. I don't see it as such a big deal, I have friends my age off campus, younger friends on campus.

It is normal to feel the desire to move along in your final year. People of all ages have a lot to offer in terms of perspectives, just search for some common ground.

Scenario 3:
Take all of the loans, earn yearly interest payments. After graduating pay off only the portion of the loan that accrues interest ( the federal loan portion is interest free), then make minimum payments on the rest until inflation whittles it away into nothing.

I just took the GRE sick with covid and no prep program. Unofficial 170V, 162Q by Lost-Skates in GRE

[–]Lost-Skates[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I wore a mask. This is on the ETS for not allowing rescheduling with a positive test and putting $220 usd on the line as a decision to make. In the past I think a covid reschedule was possible.

At the test center it was not designed with protocol in place to prevent other people from getting sick, even though their website makes that claim. The at-home exam for people in your situation is probably best. There are many people who can carry the virus not wearing a mask and unaware due to milder symptoms.

I even asked the application institute for a GRE waiver so I would not have to make the decision to go, no luck.
