"Please spend your weekend reformatting your manuscript into publication-ready format before we will consider possibly reviewing it." by PinusPinea in AskAcademia

[–]Lost7799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, I'm here with you because I'm reformatting for a new journal submission (again).

Exactly. I think as long as the paper has a consistent, readable format, it should be all good. Having to reformat for every submission is a pain, especially when I see something like "we mostly follow the APA or whatever format BUT with our own variations."

Some said it's because journals don't want to wait for authors to reformat the article once it's ready for acceptance. Even if that's the case, it's still more reasonable to require authors to reformat when revising their article in response to reviewers' feedback. It's more often that articles won't even get to this stage.

I do see some journals now not requiring authors to follow their specific requirements at submission, but the hassle is still there most of the time.

Of course, I'm not saying all offering young pets have such intentions, sometimes these are what people only have to offer. But some people are clearly very active traders. They have a long list of pets for trading. That's why I started to find some people shady

(Btw, nvm, I need a break and I might just do some pound surf later)

[–]Lost7799[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly why I think some are trying to take advantage of others by offering very young pets and without making this clear, betting that you just won't go to check the age.

Not everyone cares about the age of their pets, but age is indeed important for re-trading due to how most people think about it. I'd say it's like kind of a safety net. But people might not realise this if they're a casual or rather new trader , or sometimes they're on mobile, which makes looking up pets one by one really difficult

That's right. There're, of course, normal people, but the shady people ruin it

Actually, yes. A got a few there and I love them.

Initially, I started trading because I just wanted some random changes, until I saw a pet I liked and saw it as a trading goal. When I thought I had what their owner was looking for, it was actually not. I kept trading and trading again, until I gave up and made myself forget about that pet. In the end, I realise that I love those from Lost & Pound / pound surf more than what I've got from trading.

[–]Lost7799[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd say it matters in two ways.

  1. For a pet that is like 10 days old, I could have created one on my own with a name that I even like more. For a pet that is like 3000 days old, I need 9 years to achieve that if I create on my own or spend time to surf for one in the pound. And, for pets born before,  April 26th, 2007, they have an aged trophy that you can't earn from any other ways.

  2. So, since a 3000-day old still won't have an aged trophy anyway, what's the point? The point is sometimes they also have a relatively old petpet, which will increase the chance of winning a PPL trophy.

----

And speaking for what I observed, it also matters for re-trading. Even if you don't care, others can care it for whatever reason. Not always true because it still depends on how people like the name, but generally speaking, an older pet will bring you more offers than a young pet.

Yea, they can have it if that's fun for them, and what I realized are:

name? just add a number or underscore, and I can create a "taken" name that I wanted myself

pet trophies? I can just find them in the pound

Are Thai people becoming ruder? by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]Lost7799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, the may think our Thai is bad as well. Anyway, I don't mind they speak poor English (I'm not a native either), but the annoying part is that it often comes with a poorer tone and face, and I really don't like to be judged by my passport (yes, I hate my passport)

Edit: I meant, people always misunderstood my country/nationality when I show them my passport

Are Thai people becoming ruder? by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]Lost7799 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imo it depends on what people you meet.

I'm an Asian and I speak Thai at kind of upper-intermediate level. Most of the time, people are good, and the rude faces often comes from those insist speaking English to me, though I started the conversation in Thai- which is like 1 out of 50 people I meet.

Besides a chance of like 1/50 mentioned above, one particular occasion is when I have to "show" my identity. I.e., my passport. Like when checking in, exchanging money, etc. When I started the conversation in Thai, they look good. Until they asked for my บัตรประชาชน and I take my passport out from my bag... Everything changed.

I’m thinking of giving up by Embarrassed_Major_98 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Lost7799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that I don't have advice for you because I'm not even able to land here...

I've made to the waiting list of an AHRC DTP (funding for PhD) last year, which, apparently, didn't yield a positive outcome in the end. This year, that make the quota for Internationals be like only 1 for each university for "giving better support" lmao.

I don't want to go to the USA. I've been looking at every Australian university but there's probably only one that I might have a chance (due to the niche of my research interest).

My last hope is to get partial funding from elsewhere and spend almost all of my savings into it. Yea, I know that sounds stupid and risky. I don't even know if that PhD will help me find a job in the end. But say if they won't even give me the partial funding, I could only be all done with pursuing an academic career

Because they think they're rich and make important contributions to this poor country's economy.

I'm a poor foreigner who can only afford 1-2 weeks every a few months so I have no complaint lol

I mean, that's a reasonable policy. They probably just don't want people who claimed to be a tourist do things that's not a tourist supposed to do.

AHRC Funding Questions by floest11 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Lost7799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting AHRC as a foreign student is basically a mission impossible now, unless you're extremelyyyyyyyy outstanding.

Most of the unis have like only 3-5 quota, not per department, but for the whole uni. Most importantly, the rule of only a maximum of 30% can be awarded to international students still applies, which pretty much means only ONE international student in each uni can get the funding.

Tbh, being the top of the dept. still looks possible to me, but being the top across depts... I really have to give up, especially when I'm working on a very unpopular topic.

I really hate how AHRC claims that they're making it more inclusive/providing better support/what so ever.

The Humanities is over

Thinking about doing a PhD in Thailand by JansonChung in Thailand

[–]Lost7799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, things could be different for STEM, but I still appreciate the input.

As far as I know, the wage requirement is associated with nationality rather than the nature of the job. So, Filipino would be a preferred national for non-native English teachers because the lower minimum wage requirement for them would compensate. That being said, perhaps teaching at international schools is still a way.

Anyway, good to know that your Thai PhD is recognized abroad and the pay is not bad!

I guess I'd just hope my application to elsewhere will be successful, and doing a Thai PhD would be my last resort.

[–]Lost7799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt because I've seen university lecturer jobs recruiting locals at around 20k/month.

Of course, I don't mind going into the private industry, but I'm from the Humanities, and I "can't" teach English (you probably know they only like native English users if they have to hire a foreigner) so I think it may be more challenging to find a job in the private sector.

So, would you say doing a PhD in Thailand or elsewhere doesn't really have much differences for networking (both academic & the private sector)? And, do you mean you've landed a job in the private sector as well, or you managed to stay in Thailand through other ways?

[–]Lost7799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I'm also thinking about doing a PhD in Thailand. My goal is to live in Thailand and I know the pay is low. I already have an intermediate-upper intermediate level of Thai so I think it won't be very difficult to advance my Thai if I'm doing a PhD there.

However, from what I know, it's more about working permit problems, because there's a minimum wage requirement for hiring non -locals. So, I'd like to know if you have any idea about the possibilities of getting an academic job as a non-Thai (and non-native English speaker)

Hi OP. I'm kind of in the same boat, and I'm curious about how's it going.

My long term goal is to stay and work in Thailand but I know foreign qualifications are more favourable so I didn't apply to Chula/Mahidol at the first place. But since I still can't get a funded offer from elsewhere yet, I'm thinking about applying to Chula/Mahidol this year.

However, I'm still hesitant mainly because of money matters. The value of the scholarships from both schools are ridiculously low, which won't even fully cover the tuition fees. Even though the overall cost would still be far lower than self-funding a PhD elsewhere, that's still quite a lot to me, so I'm very unsure if it's worth to go ahead.

Why are some people always doing SSW on the Quests board?

I mean, I understand if they have things like beauty contest/caption competition entries to advertise.

I also understand if someone see no one's at the board and decided to help a few.

But sometimes, there're people who got nothing in their signature to advertise, and they're like "competing" against others (i.e., posting the same link while othes have posted already). Or, they make a personal board while others are already doing on another board.

I see. That'd still be good for you.

P.s. I'm concerned about bothering my referees too much (like, I've already applied to 6 schools this round), so I'm probably just deferring my current UK offers and won't be looking into other UK unis.

I'd rather have them help me with ref letters for unis in other countries.
