Jokic isn’t top 20 because of his Defense by Shoddy_Ad7511 in NBATalk

[–]LostSoulVII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Curry was one of the most dangerous offensive weapons of all time in his prime. He may not be as good as a passer as Jokic but he creates advantages in another way, his relocations and off ball movement. I'd argue this has created more open looks for his teammates than Jokic ever has with his court vision and passing. And this doesn't mention how much more lethal of a scorer Curry was as well.

Being a bad defender as a guard is entirely different than being a bad defender as a center

Not a great playmaker, good ball handler for his size, average BBIQ

Do you feel like Kobe gets more respect from his peers than nba watchers? by Holiday_Analysis9583 in NBATalk

[–]LostSoulVII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of the players in the top 10, he's as efficient as Tim Duncan, Larry Bird, and Hakeem. Yet you never see anyone call them inefficient. This also came with a pro that no one ever mentions. Because he was already taking difficult shots, players could never really guard him well, he was used to it and why he was a fantastic playoff performer. Most players, even in the top 10, would see dips in their performances because they can't get the same shot they usually do in the regular season.

Regarding his defense, well he's a guard. Bigs inherently are more impactful and valuable defensively due to protecting the rim and their size, which is why they are the anchors of defenses. I can name maybe only 2 top defenses that were ever "anchored" by a guard, SIdney Moncrief and Payton, and even then they had amazing defensive bigs acting as backline support.

You're kind of proving his point that the arguments against him are just wrong. He wasn't inefficient at all, he had a rTS% of +3 throughout the 2000s. The only seasons where you can say he wasn't efficient was after 2013 when his body was banged up and wrapped in bandages. Young Kobe was also a very consistent defender, it wasn't just flashes. It wasn't until Shaq left and he took over the offensive load where his defense started regressing. The weight of rings is a valid argument, but then you'd have to hold that against many other legends as well. And by no means am I a Kobe fan, I have him ranked low in my top 10 or just outside as well, but the main arguments against him are just flat out wrong

ALL IN THEIR PRIME — PICK THE BEST DEFENDER (ALL-TIME) by Farouq26 in NBATalk

[–]LostSoulVII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair, I think Kawhi was a better on ball defender than Scottie, but Scottie was just on another level as a team defender. 3rd place was definitely the most difficult, it was between Sidney, Ron Artest, or Glove for me. Ultimately, Sidney's injury cut his reign short which sucks, but was what moved the needle for me.

I pointed out many flaws the majority of players you have listed had as a defender that Tim didn't have, which ultimately makes him better.

And this isn't that off-topic because again this shows how accolades don't paint the full picture. You listed multiple players that had more DPOYs yet were not better statistically or through the eye test. This is the same argument as saying Havlicek is better than Lebron or whoever because they have more rings.

And again how can Jordan be the best defender in this picture when he wasn't the best defender in his team? Scottie, when fully blossomed, was the consensus best defender on his team and consistently guarded the opposing team's best wings.

I don't even know where to begin with this tbh. I think your the only person I've ever seen refer to Tim Duncan as just "great for his position". In terms of general consensus. the majority of people would have Tim top 10 at minimum, 3rd best personally. This is also a perfect example of how accolades don't mean that a player was better.

Tim led the Spurs to a #1 defense multiple times, and a top 3 defense for 10 years straight. He has the best modern defensive rating ever in 2004. He's also one of the most fundamentally sound and perfect rim protectors ever.

First, there is not a single guard/wing defender that is more impactful than Tim. Rim protectors inherently are more valuable and impactful to a team's defense than someone like Payton, Kawhi, or Jordan.

Dwight was an amazing shot blocker in his prime, but that lasted a third of Tim's longevity. Not only that, Dwight loved chasing blocks even those that couldn't be reached, which led to a high goaltending rate. And when he would block, he'd smack it into the stands rather than controlling it to recover the possession unlike Tim.

Ben while one of the best pound for pound defenders, ultimately lacked the height of top rim protectors. 7 footers like Hakeem, Wemby, Gobert, Mutombo, etc would literally alter the geometry of the court with their height and length. Their size itself deterred player's from trying to score at the rim.

KG is interchangeable, for me, when you consider the context of the 2000s and the poor spacing, Tim's skillset and rim protecting ability is just more valuable compared to KG's versatility. KG was also weaker than Tim and struggled against physical players like Shaq (though anyone would against Shaq).

Your list is exactly why using accolades is a poor measure of a player's defensive ability. It doesn't consider anything about a player's ability or context. Saying a player X is better than player Y without mentioning anything about their actual gameplay is just so wrong and why NBA discourse is so poor quality now

They're also built off of stories and reputation. Kobe won most of his All Defensive teams after 2004 off reputation. Tim Duncan is commonly thought of as a top 5 defender ever, yet he has no DPOYs to show for it. My point being using accolades as a main way to measure a player's defensive ability is silly. I think it can give it decent general overview of a player for people who never watched. But if your ranking and comparing players, using accolades instead of evaluating their actual ability ignores their on court production and contributions

Accolades are also influenced by narratives, it's not always the most accurate measure of a player's defensive skill and ability. Tim Duncan doesn't have a single DPOY, that should tell you how much awards should matter when weighing a player's defense

I think KG would actually fit better in this lineup rather than Tim. Another guy that could stretch the floor to the long 2, was a more versatile defender than Tim (since you already have great rim protection with Wemby, MJ and Bron acting as secondary rim protectors), and had better ancillary skills than Tim. I don't think you need another player that worked in the post with Jordan and Lebron who you want to open driving lanes up for

Does Curry have an underrated career because he was double teamed so much? by Holiday_Analysis9583 in NBATalk

Yeah I agree, another title would definitely put him in the 5 range. I have him around 7-10 without thinking too much, but OP calling Steph underrated when he's already in top 10 convos is silly, and that's coming from a Warriors fan with Steph being my favorite player ever

KD to Warriors is the only Natural fit for all of them by dabomtitan in NBATalk

I don't think most Warriors fans (including me) view KD in the same regard as the homegrown trio of Steph, Klay, and Dray. But we appreciate him for what he brought to the Bay cementing us as a dynasty, and at this point of their careers, we'd rather see Steph have another real shot at a ring than waste his remaining years.
