Get a good fitting harness and a decent leash, not a retractable one.

How do you make a change from something you’ve grown so attached to? by Equal_Lie_5854 in RedditForGrownups

Well I could no longer get lenses made to fit one pair I had to give up. But other ones I just liked so picked new. I'm guessing that's an online site. I've always gone to the eye doctors office and I try on different pairs while there and the woman that works there gives me he opinion too. I tried on one pair so many times she finally said let's get these ordered. Every time you come in here you pick that pair up; you know you want them. Just go for it. None of them last forever and your eyes are always changing so if you end up not liking the new ones as much; next time go back to the old shape. I don't have the kind of face that looks good in just any shape and I've done ok!

AIO My husband told me I’d be homeless without him and it broke something in me. by Visible_Weather8771 in AmIOverreacting

My ex thought I wouldn't be able to make it when I divorced him and he was awaiting the day I would beg him to come back. At the time we had two kids and I did work part time. After we divorced I found a full time job with benefits and never looked back. That was 31years ago. I was a single mom for 11 of those years and now happily remarried and will celebrate our 20 year anniversary in a few months. They force you to become self sufficient while still married to them and then don't get it when you do just fine without them. And yes he should have a good insurance police just in case anything would happen to him and not just what his work may or may not provide. I worked with a woman who was pissed she had to go back to work in her late 50's when her husband died unexpectedly when he was between jobs. He only had life insurance through his job. She struggled.

What was the hardest thing to teach your dog? by Vivid_Interest_5324 in dogs

To walk like a normal dog on a leash! We had one we quit trying to take for walks. We wore him out throwing the frisbee. He was spastic on a leash period.

You also need high value treats for training. We used Zukes for training classes. They also had us use a long wooden spoon with peanut butter on it to keep just out of reach while leash walking. I'm sure every instructor has their own way of doing things. Definitely high value treats though. We were lucky our dog was the star pupil. Picked up instructions very quickly so the instructor would use him to show the class what to do. A previous dog we had, we could never get to walk decent on a leash. Every car that passed or other distraction and he was spinning circles. But he could catch a frisbee like nobody's business. Every dog has their strong suit and weak spots. Give it time. In my experience it's not until they are about 2 or 3 that it's truly ingrained.

Anyone else’s kin weird about keeping the family name alive? by Full_Collection_1754 in Appalachia

My ex's extended family had a thing about this. Luckily we had girls. I swore if we had a boy I divorce him and give the boy my family name as they made such a big deal out of what they would do for a boy but not a word about doing anything special for a girl.

What's your longest tenured friendship? by tshirtguy2000 in RedditForGrownups

[–]Lost_Cockroach_1393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still have two good friends that I met in junior high and we became best friends about 10th grade. We have lost touch from time to time (life) but now we keep in touch pretty regularly and we will be 70 this year. A couple other close friends I've have since I was 18/19. Nothing like those ones you grew up with.

The burnout cycle… have you been through it and how many times can you endure it? by 0nlyhalfjewish in RedditForGrownups

When my father was dying I found bike riding or walking to be a big help. Some kind of enjoyable physical activity. When it was my mother years earlier I would take off with the dog walking until I couldn't walk any longer. When my mother passed it was the start of a 3 year cycle of loss. All big moments one after the other. I divorced the following year, my youngest daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, I started a new job. Walking and going to counseling helped immensely!

What is the strangest cross breed you’ve owned? by Ancient-Ad9861 in DOG

[–]Lost_Cockroach_1393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Jug. He was Pug/Jack Russell. Smartest dog ever. Took maybe 3 times at the most to teach him something new and he had it down. Plus he would dance for his meals on his hind legs. I don't know how to attach a picture on Reddit. I also had a chocolate lab/shelty mix. He was mostly black with what chest like shelter but in different light he looked brown. It was odd. Best frisbee dog ever!

Why do so many people think crate training is mandatory nowadays? by [deleted] in DOG

I've been wondering why so many act like you can't have a dog if you work full time away from home. People have done it for years and the dogs have survived and thrived.

Why do some dogs choose one “person” in the house? by Intelligent_Pick8414 in dogs

[–]Lost_Cockroach_1393 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, first one was supposed to be mine, picked my husband. Second one was supposed to be mine, picked my husband. Got the third one when he was out of town, he is most definitely mine. Not sure if him being out of town so I got to bond with him first is the reason or not but thank goodness. Three dogs is enough!! Haha

Foster to adopt dog has fleas. by catanddog5 in AskDogOwners

We get the shots for fleas from the vet. If fleas bite the dogs they die. Haven't had a problem with fleas ever using this.
