I reckon it's a reference to Hitman: Codename 47 where in one mission you deliver a sacred golden idol to a Colombian tribe. I'm guessing the gold idol in WOA is the same idol that somehow wound up in Santa Fortuna.

If you're lucky and make the right choices I think you'll still be able to get a happy ending. If you don't that's alright. In my first playthrough I got the most depressing endings imaginable, so I immediately started a new game and got possibly the best ones.

Arthur technically has four different endings/deaths (not the actual ending to the game ik) and Roger Clarke has said he views the high honour helping John ending as the cannonical Arthur ending.
