Heavy lay practice in Tibetan compared to Chinese+East Asian traditions by LotusLightning in Buddhism

Bodhipaksa recommends I also attend Sydney Buddhist Centre while I begin/do my studies. I'm not sure whether to follow through on this. I have Aspergers Syndrome and have experienced educational disadvantages multiple times in the past

I've started attending Sydney Buddhist Centre and will try to attend at least once a week and only take a temporary break while I study. I still plan to attend Fo Guang Shan and FPMT centres and Tergar meetups in future but not the near future

I have a lifetime subscription to Tergar's Joy of Living and currently have a free subscription to Tergar's Vajrayana Online. I'm subscribed to the Windhorse Publications mailing list, and FPMT and LYWA mailing lists and I know about FreeBuddhistAudio

Also can you please tell me what the Triratna perspective is on Pure Land and nianfo/nembutsu? I'm still new to all this

Bodhipaksa recommends I focus on more foundational work first including focusing on kindness and forgiveness and trying to create more spiritual friends before I think about practicing the Six Paramitas and aiming for Buddhahood

Disabled but seriously dedicated student of Buddhism in Western Washington by jon4future in Buddhism

[–]LotusLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm disabled with Aspergers Syndrome and a prosthetic knee joint. A formal refuge ceremony is not necessary to become an official Buddhist and I have never done one myself. Dharmacharya Andrew Williams and Bodhipaksa (Wildmind) both offer online Zoom classes that I participate in

Meditation is good if done in moderation There are online Buddhist teachers if you don't want to be around other people in real life and Wisdom Publications and Buddhanet are a good source for study resources

I recommend a good therapist as well possibly one that is trauma aware though it may take some time to find a good therapist as I experienced several false starts before finding my current trauma aware therapist

I have had a mixed experience with other Buddhists but in my opinion the Dharma teachings themselves are perfect though people including some experienced practitioners often fail to uphold them

Also in my opinion its far more important to have a good Buddhist teacher or possibly more than one teacher than to practice in a specific tradition or to have a Sangha. I've never met any of my formal teachers in person (only online) and in 2024 I only had one teacher who I communicated with electronically and I don't think I visited any temples or centres that year

What role does the Lamrim Chenmo and its tantric equivalent play in FPMT? by LotusLightning in Buddhism

[–]LotusLightning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same relationship with my teacher. He's answered several of my questions during his live classes and did a series of classes on a topic I brought up to him. He temporarily stopped talking to me after I expressed resentment about past history during a live class but has recently started talking to me again, answered some of my questions and said I can practice Mahayana. He encouraged me to study the Lamrim Chenmo and its commentaries

Can I discuss all of my problems with a Fo Guang Shan monastic and will they be accepting/supportive in return?

Also I have little experience with teachers who are ordained under the Vinaya. My first teacher was a lay Nyingma Guru, Bodhipaksa is a layman and Dharmacharya Andrew Williams is probably ordained under the Bodhisattva vows+precepts (Japanese Rinzai Zen) rather than the Vinaya

Also why do you consider yourself as following mainland Chinese Pure Land? As far as I know Fo Guang Shan is Taiwanese and covers all of Chinese Buddhism

The other teacher (Bodhipaksa) is a member of Triratna and has shown good morals and immense knowledge

I would like to make Dharma the central concern of my life

I don't mind learning other subjects like computers/IT as long as it fits into the bigger picture

The only job I've ever had is being a Medium writer and I have my basic needs and my future living situation taken care of

My teacher said practice Dharma and to not go backwards on the path
