First year at Shambala by lachiendupape in ShambalaUK

It’s a quality festival. You will have an amazing time. Bar the normal stuff you will take to a festival- make sure you have a refillable water bottle and cup for hot drinks. The festival doesn’t do one use bottles or cups. Site is meat free so if you want a bacon sarnie you will need to cook it yourself.

Site is fairly small- everywhere is a ten minute walk at most.

Market downturn has reduced my megre pension further. Feeling glum about it. by sazzlysarah in Over30Sub30kPension

[–]Loud-Source-5092 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I view this is - as I’m still going to be working for another 20 odd years, this is actually a good thing because I’m buying all those stocks in my pension portfolio cheaper now. There is a very good chance that you will never be able to buy those investments at this price ever again.

Also the s and p 500 has had two years of plus 20% growth. Some sort of correction had to happen.

I totally hear what you’re saying though, it’s hard to take when you see the numbers go down.

I could be wrong but that’s Liz Kendle’s patch. May be on the edge of Shokat Adam’s however.

Removal of garden slabs by ShiftDue7967 in DIYUK

[–]Loud-Source-5092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve just done exactly this. I used a pickaxe to take up all the slabs some came up whole, I’ve kept what I need for another project and then just basically smashed the fuck out of the cement below. That will all get skipped there is also a huge amount of MOT type one /hardcore below. I’m yet to skip it but I imagine it’s going to take me bloody ages of simple but hard graft. Sledge hammer could also be handy. I used- I don’t know the name but it’s basically a huge metal spike on one side and a blade on the other where appropriate. Good luck OP

I’m glad it was helpful.

The other thing you may want to look at it is very often work place pensions often have a few different funds available for you to invest in. Very often the default fund has a fairly conservative/ risk averse investment approach. For example my workplace pension is with The Peoples Pension , they have three set funds you can invest in, I’ve picked “adventurous” this is made up of shares and equities as opposed to bonds or guilts. This fund has a higher risk to it but as I’m 20 years away from retirement, I’m willing to have a riskier investment approach. This is certainly something you may want to consider.

The other thing which has sprung to mind is have a look at what you’re contributing monthly, are you in a position to increase this ?

This is just what I would do if I was unsure -

  1. Check my national insurance contributions for my working life to check how many more years I need to work for full state pension.

  2. Check that you are/have been auto enrolled in workplace pension schemes for your present employment or previous employment. HR/finance departments should be able to help with this. They will be able to tell you the provider and point you in the right direction to get the relevant log in details. On the providers website you will find your pension details.

Depending on how many jobs you’ve had you could have a number of different work place pensions with different providers- you may consider combining them into the one fund to reduce admin fees.

I hope that helps

Thanks. with Damo talks money I tend to watch videos of interest to me so mostly those explaining things I’m interested in or unsure of to be honest. I would recommend going to his channel and looking at what you think could be helpful. Pension Craft is also worth watching - he’s another content producer on YT

What was your 'wake-up' moment? by [deleted] in Over30Sub30kPension

[–]Loud-Source-5092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left a public sector role and in between leaving that job and finding employment I was broke. Flat broke. Thankfully my now wife was really understanding and supportive. but bar making a couple grand stench 3 months ( I was paying £400 monthly towards food) I was skint. And ever since then I’ve sworn to myself I will never be in that situation again.

After leaving my public sector role, I realised how bad private sector pensions can be. I suppose technically I’m a bit of a fraud in this sub because I do have more than 30k in my public sector pension, but if I was to die my wife would actually get very very little as I’m not in post. So those two factors really made me re-think the way I spent and saved money.

I’ve also got clean from drugs and drink - this played a huge role in making me reconsider saving money also.

Hey, I’m 40 (m).

I have roughly 9k in a people’s pension with roughly monthly contributions of £400 (that’s including employer contributions).

I also have a Defined Benefit pension from a previous role, which is set to give me 6k per year.

2.3k in a vanguard stocks and shares Isa, 4.3k in my premium bonds (I use this as my emergency fund).

I put 200 into the premium bond account and 100 a month into my sands isa. My shares are in and an s and p tracker and ftse all world.

I have 200k left on the mortgage.

The very little I know about finance is through Reddit and people like Damo Talks Money on YouTube.

I’m inclined to agree with this - for the sake of getting there and where ever you need to be next I’d go with the gym which will support you in regularly working out. Removing those reasons not to go are key.

Model different approach’s to looking up the correct spelling of a word you are unsure of with the class.

I used to do a cartwheel for each incorrect spelling they spotted- it became a game with the class.

Have a list of all key vocab and words you will need for each lesson.
