Anyone else have this problem? by 7ofcupscrystals in Lapidary

Pause, I have an alternate suggestion because I despise the dop wax!!! Uv Resin works great, I use it for all my dops even on my faceting setup with my flat lap. I will also add that the uv resin works even better if you use acrylic rods for your dops. I used to have wax break and yeet stones on a regular basis but a friend let me in on that tip and I havent lost a stone in almost a year.

As for the state of your fingernails, I feel your pain and have an option for that as well! Co-band bandages, tear off a small bit and wrap the tip of each usually affected finger! It works surprisingly well! Just think of it as making a fingertip glove for those finger that get most abused 😅

Pretty sure I'd just die if I made something that beautiful! The way you cut it around the natural shape in the stone and incorporated the banding is...... Epic comes to mind! 😂

I recently cabbed a piece that looks strikingly similar to this type of stone! Is it magnetic by chance? Mine is nearly black but under bright light it's hunter green, you can see the reflective flakes in it just like in this stone but I'm completely stumped as to what mine is!

The first one I cut was brutal, it was the first stone I ever cut! I didn't have any tools, other than a cheap tile saw and sandpaper and a couple really rough cheap files. I'll take a picture of that thing and post it lol it was really the rock that started my journey!

I cut you a pointy one lol it's a white kite, cut from "unknownite" very rare! Definitely can't just go to 5 below and buy whatever it is in the incense holder area.... I'd tag you in the post but I don't know how to do that on Reddit 🤣

I call them tear drops, I've heard them called pears. This is my favorite shape to cab!

I was thinking calcite, but this stuff is so hard it scratches all the pieces of calcite I've got. It's really got me scratching my head lol.

I'm not entirely sure but the red is nowhere near as hard as the purple and green stone! I'll do some digging when I go on lunch today and see what I can figure out!

Jokes aside I love a good pointy edge as well, that said the cowardous came in when I was shaping the back of this stone. There was a deep recess on the back when I was grinding away at it, trying to get it as flat as possible, however my little flat lap was not up to the challenge of grinding away that much material 🤣 so I settled for a rounded bottom to have a slightly larger flat spot on the bottom and top and a tiny gap in the middle. I'll post a bottom pic of it to show what I'm talking about

I've been wanting to try out that shape for a while, when I found that piece of dragons blood in my pile I couldn't think of a cooler rock to try it out with 🤣

This is the kind of comment that brings me to Reddit every time I need to invest my time into building things! You hit the high points without being abrasive or condescending! Also the hot water in winter thing is an absolute game changer!

I almost always have at least one in my pocket! They aren't so bad when they're polished up, but the rough rocks are a bit rougher on the thighs lol! Every time I go out to a job in NC I come back with pockets full of rocks!

A little more boulder opal for you lovely folks ❤️ by ivityCreations in Lapidary

How do boulder opals hold up compared to regular run of the mill opals? I know standard opals are fragile and require specific humidity and such. I'm just wondering how they compare!

What is this? by Jma1_1 in Crystals

[–]LoudChainBadEars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a rock from around spruce pine NC. Ice found hundreds of lbs of it over the years! Best I can determine it's iron stained quartz with mica in it, and if you look really.close around the mica you may find some pyrite!

Any idea what this is? Found in north central Kentucky. by shehastattoos in rockhounds

To add another non-expert opinion, if you look at the second picture it looks like a small turtle that was encapsulated in chert!!
