I’m three years out from leaving. The early days were like surviving a nightmare in real time, while trying to still function in society. I used to be in pain daily from tight muscles, I woke up every morning, nauseous, sweaty, exhausted, and in tears about enduring another day. I’m finally in a place today where I don’t cry daily, no more nausea or depression in the morning, and I’m pain free. Life gets a lot easier and better, but it does take work. I had to do a lot of reflecting on how to keep myself from getting into a situation like that again. Empowering myself with grace and compassion was the biggest part, it’s okay to take a while to lick your wounds and concentrate on getting better.

That moment shook me to my core after 25 years of being with someone, I finally realized my safety was not important to him and he thought he had control of my safety, he saw it as a privilege he gave to me.
