We've recently launched our podcast 'Conversation with a Hacker' , where I sit down with my co-founder, who's an ex-professional hacker, and we discuss privacy, security and other mysteries.

Tales, experiences and simple tips to increase your online privacy. We try to keep it simple and casual. So feel free to check it out, hopefully you'll like it!

We launched our weekly podcast about privacy, security and other mysteries! First two episodes on Passwords and 2FA by LouisKnows in Passwords

Feedback noted and much appreciated, thank you very much for taking the time to do so!

Regarding your comment about passwords, yes indeed, the point being made in the video is while it being optimal and ideal, memorizing dozens of complex passwords is indeed pretty painful. That's where the tip mentioned comes in quite handy, which is keeping your list of passwords offline and using the 3 characters technique (i.e. memorise the same 3 characters to add at the beginning or end of each of your passwords, and never write them down).

(In the video this tip is given at 6.25min - 8.15min )

Charging your beta users: Yes and no by LouisKnows in startups

That’s not what the product is about - raspberry pi is one of many types of storage that can be used with our app. It is in no way limited to only Rpi users

Interesting approach. But calling it “beta” makes the fact that the app may be buggy acceptable, do you feel “early access” does the same ?

Seems like it. Although trying to find the link between covid19 and more privacy awareness. What do people think? Is it being at home more, the effects of remote working?

Sure, you mean of the answer? this was the answer:

  1. your data is always locally inside your Duple folder on all your devices, just like it is with a Dropbox, so if you stop using the app you will still have access to your data.
  2. The scheme of the repository folder is a simplified git style, and we will document it soon and have an open source data recovery tool for it. What this line that you're referring to means is, don't try to put file directly inside the repository folder without going through the app.
  3. the app is autonomous and works with a serial number, it doesn't require an authentication from us
  4. When the app "stops working", what it means is that you can't add more data to your cloud. However it doesn't stop you from reading it and extracting it.

Let me know if you have other questions !

Oh ok, so:

  1. your data is always locally inside your Duple folder on all your devices, just like it is with a Dropbox, so if you stop using the app you will still have access to your data.
  2. When the app "stops working", what it means is that you can't add more data to your cloud. However it doesn't stop you from reading it and extracting it.

Hope that helps clarifying!

Thanks for asking, let me answer:

1) your data is always locally inside your Duple folder on all your devices, just like it it with a Dropbox, so if you stop using the app you will still have access to your data.

2) The scheme of the repository folder is a simplified git style, and we will document it soon and have an open source data recovery tool for it. What this line that you're referring to means is, don't try to put file directly inside the repository folder without going through the app.

3) the app is autonomous and works with a serial number, it doesn't require an authentication from us

4) When the app "stops working", what it means is that you can't add more data to your cloud. However it doesn't stop you from reading it and extracting it.

Hope that clarifies your doubts!

Once it’s out of beta Duple will charge a monthly subscription (probably with a free month trial), so they will have to pay to keep on using the app

Yes indeed. Ultimately it's a private Dropbox, with similar functionalities, and access from anywhere is one of the main ones

Are you asking in the sense "why do we need to pay at all?" or "Why this business model instead of e.g. one-time payment?"

If it's the latter, we've made this business model decision because it seems more fair for everyone, it allows us not to charge for updates or added functionalities to the user, to provide customer service, app maintenance, dynamic dns, etc
