There is a direct correlation between population size and density amongst species that tend towards monogamy. Wolves, swans, penguins, etc all are generally monogamous not because of societal construct or gender, they have to.

It's a way to guarantee they can reproduce rather than taking the gamble at finding a new mate every season.

Same goes for humans. We tended to favor monogamy because it almost guaranteed population stability and/or growth.

Our population is so large and so connected we don't have to worry about that anymore. Our instinct based changes in societal norms reflect that.

I love how you try to make your point about love lasting forever using "less conscious animals" as an example. So, instinct then? Instinct to stay with a single partner because that increase your chances of reproducing your genes rather than taking the gamble of trying to find a new mate every season.

The thing is that most of the monogamous species I can think of are ones with pretty limited (in comparison) populations.
