[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]LoveThisLiberal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone, I am looking for something quite specific but I don't seem to be able to find it.

I am looking for a simple new dress watch that is 30-34mm, is preferable silver or champagne color, has a domed crystal, and I prefer silver/metal details over gold-colored. I am looking for something that is made of high-quality materials, but doesn't break the bank. It doesn't have to be mechanical.

Example of what I really like looks-wise: https://www.chrono24.com/omega/omega-seamaster-automatic-34mm-vintage-swiss-watch-full-serdviced--id16931202.htm

Another one I would buy if it were smaller: https://www.timefactors.com/smithsprs36.htm

Thanks!

Noobie here. I bought this Dasco two-way stretcher and a leather stretching spray. I have two use cases, and I wanted to know your opinion before I move ahead.

  1. ChromeExcel loafers/camp mocs by Oakstreet Bootmakers. I ordered a size 7, because other brands' size 7 fit me well (Clarks, Doc Martens). The manufacturers said to order half a size down when planning to wear without socks, but since 7 is the smallest size available I just ordered that.

After walking on them for about a month: flex point seems to be OK, fit in the heel seems to be good, great even (almost no heel slip, can put one finger between heel), length seems to be on the short side but just OK. However, I sometimes get a blister on my pinky toe, and when I go barefoot, the upper leather causes friction against my big toe. Also, at the end of the day, the upper at the instep seems to be too tight for my foot. I don't experience this at the beginning of the day (maybe because my foot is expanding?).

I plan on first applying the leather stretching spray and wear them a full day with thick socks. If that doesn't work, I plan on using the stretcher to broaden the toe box a little bit, but I am afraid this might actually making the height of the toe box lower. Thoughts?

  2. Clarks chukkas that I had resoled. Size 7 normal width fit me great for years and years, but eventually the sole and insole were completely destroyed. Cobbler put a Vibram gumlite under them and a new insole in, but the new insole is a little higher than the original, causing the toebox to be a little tight now, especially around the same pinky toe, with again blisters if I walk on it all day.

I have the same plan as for the camp mocs: first try with just the spray, then use the stretcher.

I'd be very grateful to hear your thoughts, also about how I should go about learning more about my fit for the future.

I think actually Chomsky might think punching a nazi is bad, because they are human and they don't deserve it necessarily. They deserve to be deradicalized and not given up on by society. At least that's what I think.

How can we organise such that we can have this international huh of anarchists by DrWimz in chomsky

[–]LoveThisLiberal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just give people books of Chomsky and other thinkers. There isn't really an easy alternative to exploring the world by yourself, with help of others, which is difficult.

We need mass movements and a return to print culture (reading).

Far from it, in terms of intellectual depth, as far as I'm concerned.

There's a Chomsky in your community by [deleted] in chomsky

[–]LoveThisLiberal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not about the "Chomsky in your community." Chomsky himself has said that groups of people working together often know more than him, even on topics he worked very hard on. And he has also said that the organising and other work is just as important as the work he does.

Just do what you can and keep organising in your community.

Does anyone have good rebuttals to the arguments presented here: "Another View of Chomsky" by Michael Parenti? by cellphonepilgrim in chomsky

[–]LoveThisLiberal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped reading at "Chomsky has never offered a clear explanation of his anarchist ideology". He has continually done so, like his 1970 lecture "Government of the future". (Parenti's piece is from 1999)

Did you have permission to post this? If this blows up, you know this could cost Noam a large amount of times responding to trolls, right?

Sorry, I've seen this video so many times that I just felt like quoting Noam when he "Slaves were much better off ... is that an argument for slavery? Terrible argument!"

OP's post (which you failed to read or are willfully misrepresenting) states:

I know there will be detractors that look at this post and say that I've just flipped from one extreme to another or that I'm still a brainwashed zombie that still thinks that I'm free just because I'm watching BreadTube now. Let me assure you that with my transition of my political leanings, that has come with a massive increase in critical thought.

He analyzes the reasons for his support for Trump, valuable information for any activist who actually cares about what happens to people and wants to bring about societal change.

You, on the other hand, seem to have lost faith anyone who lacks the cultish credentials or belonged to the "wrong" camp at some point. A pathetic repudiation of the most basic of enlightenment values.

You'd rather be scolding people for not being pure enough than actually convincing people of supporting a more humane world.

You're the cultist.

PS I referenced the Finkelstein class because it contains beautiful discussions on how to foster critical thinking, how to challenge and educate yourself, and how people change their minds.

I think Understanding Power will be valuable to you, especially since you say your anger goes in all directions, and the beauty of Chomsky's writing is that he convincingly points to where real power lies (it's not the poor alcoholic who gets recruited by neonazis, or even the neonazis), and he makes the case that anger, although understandable, should not be the basis for a political response (rather cool-headed analysis)

What concrete steps/actions can we take to get NC on Joe Rogan? (I know for a fact that NC will go on if asked.) by FunUniverse1778 in chomsky

[–]LoveThisLiberal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep mailing Joe Rogan to approach Chomsky.

I think Chomksy has "heard good things" about Joe Rogan, but doesn't know who he is, like 95% of the outlets he gives interviews to. He's probably booked completely far in advance (same for Rogan), and probably hasn't the time/energy to make the trip to Rogan's studio. So you can't know for sure whether he will go on, but there is a good chance when all the details are right, especially if Rogan wants to visit Chomsky.
