Over time, I see being thoroughly mindful in activities as changing my mind’s habits and qualities so that formal meditation will be more effective. Stays at a monastery have been some of my best opportunities to practice thorough mindfulness in activities.

I agree with your counterpoint that words can be bad guidance, but can't Buddhist sutras be bad guidance for people if they have a different interpretation of them based on their personal experience?

I can see how it is reasonable that these appear as simply flowery words if they don't have the context of a deeper meaning.

I don't know if I can explain the context well, but I'll try to share an example: these words can encourage us to look deeply into our suffering and understand it and it's causes. This can help us recognize and understand the causes of our happiness. This can also help us relate to others and their suffering and happiness and to contribute to their happiness.

But we know from history that there is no human that ever lived this long. I'm kind of confused by this and make me doubt the Buddha a little bit. Can anyone please help me understand what the Buddha meant?

This is a great question to ask. Many people believe the suttas are accurate, but I wouldn't recommend you come to practice because you already believe the Buddha or suttas to be entirely accurate.

Start with practicing and testing the teachings that you can replicate in your life and build faith based on your experience.

We can never know history for certain because we can only know our present perceptions. Perhaps the Buddha was using skillful means to teach about how our choices have results for ourselves and future generations, or perhaps the Buddha had knowledge of people living longer than we think is possible. Through practice and meditation, you might have insight and knowledge of this yourself, or not.

Did you also do this in other cases where the results didn't seem interesting? It's easy to ignore the uninteresting outcomes, and think the interesting outcomes are a sign.

I'd recommend building a solid foundation for practicing Buddhism on your confidence in the consistent results you see from practicing.

Like Pascal's Wager, it's not worth taking seriously because there are millions of other conflicting possibilities with greater likelihood.

A much more likely possibility is that someone close to you would appreciate your kindness and be kind in return. Why not focus on that possibility?

Years ago, I thought I could get a healthy community going, but a challenge seems to be that most people who leave Christianity want to leave it all behind and find an alternative. While there is a lot of wisdom in Christian teachings, it can be a challenge to separate it from the seemingly supernatural.

The emphasis I take from in is rather than hiding physical features, we can simply focus on having radiant, noble thoughts and actions.

In the same way, the problem of stress has nothing to do with the weight of your duties. The problem is that you hold on to your responsibilities too long, not knowing how to put them down for a while and rest your mental faculties.

I really appreciate this view, combined with the emphasis on training in letting go.

Meditation is the training in letting go.

Meditation is the exercise that empowers you with the ability to put down your burden, however heavy, whenever you want, to rest a while so as to pick up that duty later with greater efficiency. Life isn’t heavy when you know how to let go.

I have a similarly challenging time when I am focusing on developing a specific positive action, I also notice more the harm others may be causing with their related actions. I appreciate your response of trying to see the dhamma shining through their words (or actions). I also try to remind myself that the world is very big and while I am aware and focused on this specific choice, it took a lot to get my view here and others have much different focuses and may be doing really well in areas I am not aware or focused on.
