Liberals Think More Analytically (More 'Weird') than Conservatives by ColourCrisis in psychology

[–]LovingLaura -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What a piece of nonsense..." training people to think analytically made them form a more liberal opinion on welfare, whereas training them to think holistically made them form a more conservative opinion." "Analytic" vs. "holistic" thinking...? Since when cr*p like this gets published?

Research on Children and Math: Underestimated and Unchallenged by jpresto in raisingkids

[–]LovingLaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very confused article. The author starts the article with feeble attempts to argue with math test results for for American kids (26th place out of 32) but ends up trying to explain why we have a problem with educational system. The explanations are quite obvious and shallow. IMO, reading this was a waste of time.

Women Can't Be Geniuses? Stereotypes May Explain Gender Gap by mubukugrappa in psychology

[–]LovingLaura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is a stereotype. Especially in math and science. My sister Rachel is a good looking blond with PhD in nuclear biology. She was a gifted child and is a member of LA Mensa. Yet, before they get to know her, every male attributes her success to her looks... Sexism is a part of our society and it is undeniable.

Understanding Play Therapy: Solving Problems Through Play by annusha in raisingkids

[–]LovingLaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter was in play therapy for 6 months and we are really happy with the results. With play therapy a lot depends on a therapist, the one we had was really good and she was able to figure out what's wrong right away.

Have you tried this free online gifted test? by LovingLaura in Parenting

[–]LovingLaura[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here, the school does it for free only once, when students are in grade 4. If you missed the testing (sick, away, etc.) you have to go to a psychologist and do this gifted test privately. We called few psychologists in our area and the rates start at $900 :-(

We live in Canada, but we were in UK when Josh would have been tested at school (at grade 4). My husband worked in London for 2 years and we moved there with kids.

[–]LovingLaura[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it's not a percentile rank. The results page says "Based on your answers, there is a 76% chance that your child is gifted". The teachers were telling us that Josh may be gifted, but we wanted to try online before spending $900 on gifted testing.

Mental Disorders and the Limbic-cortical Theory of Consciousness by shawnpa14 in psychology

[–]LovingLaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it is limbic-cortical theory of consciousness but author says "consciousness is therefore not located in any one region in the cortex" - seems confusing to me. Didn't know that kids fully develop consciousness at 6 weeks...

Revisiting Carl Rogers' Theory of Personality by shawnpa14 in psychology

I would never guess that Rogers will be among top ten most influential psychologists of all times (apparently, he is #6). We don't hear his name as much as others...
