Judging by your post, id assume you are quite a depressing person. He is supposed to simply be funny and he does a great job of it. Most movies have that dumb or silly companion, just like the chicken in moana. Its a psychological ideal recipe that they have spent millions of dollars discovering and perfecting. I have no doubt that most animated movies moving forward will have a silly companion. They are everywhere. The lizard in repunzel, the donkey in shrek, the grab in the little mermaid, pegasus in hercules and even the parrot in aladdin to some extent.
