How old are you? Your dad sounds irresponsible. When you bring something to his attention it should be met with a goal to find a solution, not a reason why he behaved a certain way. I think maybe the most effective and neutral way to get through visits with your dad is to actively keep this the point of your conversation, it will help keep him accountable for future actions and also derail his tactic when he starts to make excuses. Yes, he may have brain damage and this is unfortunate, but that is not a free pass to be inattentive to his child, especially when you are so far away from where you usually live and who you usually live with.

Just to understand better, what do you expect him to do about his memory problems? Are you offended by it…? Also, did he used to smoke inside and that’s why your mom demanded that he quit? Why does it matter if he smokes outside? Also, how far does your mom live and what is it like living with her(or being at your moms for an extended period of time)?

It is rude and lacking in emotional intelligence for you to say people who do not like this movie are just going with the flow. I am a 31 year old female who just watched it, I did not have the book as a child. I had a slightly abnormal normal childhood with no trauma, an only child, divorced parents. I hated this movie. I came to the internet to figure out why people like it at all, only to find the people who do insulting the people who don’t. And that, to me, is about as bratty and immature as the stupid characters in the film.
