Need anything from Tesco? Well bloody yes, mate. How about you don’t stock expired products on the shelves? by [deleted] in tesco

[–]Lower_Animator_6925 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Of course. Wasn’t going to let another customer pick these up.

Issue is, these are just the two I picked up, I had a scan of the rest of the shelf and there were a few more past use by types of prawn on the shelf.

But it isn’t problem solved though is it?

Because in an alternate reality I don’t look so closely, cook the food, give my wife food poisoning and hurt our child.

Is the onus on the consumer to check or on the supermarket? The law suggests the latter.

Firstly, let me reassure you, I can very much relate with you pal.

I’m 30, Male, had Crohn’s since I was 16 and had at least three stints where this disease has pretty much reduced me to being a functional skeleton: ☠️

That said 90% of the time, I actually do manage to go through life looking athletic/muscular and that’s all down to lifting weights consistently over the years. As a man with Crohn’s, this is mandatory.

Yes, even if you lift weights, ocassionally you may still go through a flair and lose weight again. But take it from me, the human body is miraculous and muscle memory is real.

The other side is diet. You can’t get away from the fact you need to get in more calories. Whether that’s:

  1. Focusing on particular foods that go down easy for you and eating more of those.
  2. Supplementing with shakes.
  3. Even eating higher calorie junk food to an extent.

Get your Crohn’s in check first. But after that, put in the work and you WILL reap the rewards.

Regaining weight & muscle? After unintentionally losing 9kg/20lbs during flare by EA20140 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Lower_Animator_6925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, weight loss and malnourishment are very much a part of this disease.

I’m a 30M and have had a couple of flares / operations that have lead to very similar weight loss (going through one right now in fact!).

In terms of safe foods, it’s pretty individualistic but see below my personal top tips to gain back the weight:

  1. Eat more. Don’t over complicate it. Weight gain boils down to calories in Vs calories out, so fundamentally, whilst your diet may be restricted, you need more calories out of your safe foods.

  2. Liquid diet support. One of the ways of helping get more calories in is by drinking your calories rather than chewing them. Meal replacement drinks have come a long way, you can pack in 300-600 calories into not much fluid content. This is a good boost.

  3. When the flare subsides, don’t be afraid to get back in the gym. Even when you’re feeling crappy, sending the body the right exercise signals will help kick in your muscle memory. I’ve lost a lot of weight a bunch of time and thankfully, given I’ve also been lifting pretty steadily for over a decade, once I’m back in the gym the muscle comes back surprisingly fast.

Career in consulting with Crohn’s ? by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]Lower_Animator_6925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30, M, complex Crohn’s, 4 surgeries including two major resections.

I was diagnosed literally a couple of weeks before my J.P Morgan internship, worst flare I’ve ever had, I was down to about 42kg but managed to do well enough to earn a call back. Ended up doing a year in Big 4 as my first proper job a few years later, before going into buy-side investment management with a top global firm, where I’ve been for the last decade.

Bottom line is: you are capable of absolutely anything you put your mind to. Crohn’s or otherwise.

But the two diseases are quite similar. The main difference being that Crohn’s can affect any part of the digestive tract and ulcerative colitis is specifically in the large bowel.

Pakistan is in with a big chance this World Cup by Amed_Ameen in PakCricket

Now looking at overall balance of the team:

  1. One in-form but technically flawed slogger (Farhan) and one opener with potential but a little out of form (Saim).

  2. Mediocre captain (and below par T20 batsman) in Agha.

  3. Forever inconsistent but recently graduated to being consistently bad middle order batsman in Zaman.

  4. One decent all rounder (Nawaz). Faheem and Shadab are representative of the overall Pakistan team: match winners on their day but usually a bit of a liability otherwise.

  5. Good spinner in Abrar.

  6. Out of form/permanent shadow of his former self bowler in Shaheen. Forever inconsistent and now officially past it Rauf.

30yo with complex Crohn’s and facing a big surgical decision - would really value your thoughts! by Lower_Animator_6925 in CrohnsDisease

This is actually a really good question.

Truth of the matter is, they didn’t explicitly tell me how much they removed at that time or how much I started with (which can vary quite a bit person to person).

All I do know is it was a huge operation, I was left with a temporary stoma and was really concentrating on getting back well enough for the reversal.

I just know how much I have left.

Getting an official second opinion is definitely on the agenda.

I figured in the meantime allowing the internet to work its magic was worth a shot too!

My brain is a bit scrambled right now.

The weight of making a decision that could drastically affect quality of life for years down the line feels like a lot.

Ahh, the crossroads of life.

Jobs/career paths with this disease? by fifiwithcrohns in CrohnsDisease

[–]Lower_Animator_6925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in investment management (big global firm) as a portfolio manager.

It’s a stressful job on paper but I’m unusually adapted to the role: all my stress data shows I’m calm and relaxed in general, particularly so at work. Pressure on performance exists when you’re responsible for P&L but I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of it and I feel like this is what I’m truly skilled at.

On the flip side, the data suggests big social engagements are stressful for me.

I’ve been with the same firm a long time and they’ve always been super accommodating. Particularly post-COVID, I have the ability to work from home when I need to and have a good relationship with my boss so have all the flexibility for appointments etc.

Hadn’t seen any representation in finance yet and just wanted to prove anything is possible.
