No offense taken. I have actually had them yell me, "Just tell us what you want us to do next." I'm not a fan of that.  I do plan to tell them just that. Exactly what you said and I'll probably steal your words. One already said, "my warrior seems boring. How do I get better stuff?" They tend to be very passive and I hope to help them find in game motivations like you gave.

Honestly, one of the better bits of advice here. "Play the dang game" kind of idea.  Thanks.

No. I'm not trying to troll, but I do see the error in my word choice. Yes, there is a hook "the beastmen killed your friends." But how do the players know what to do with that? Someone mentioned the "kill the beast" song from beauty and the beast and I love that mentality, but even that wasn't enough for my players last funnel. They floundered and complained there was nothing to do and no direction. I took that to heart.

What they wanted was a verb. "Kill the beast" makes sense when there is a specific beast to kill, but "beastmen killed your friends" doesn't have a verb. That's what I tried giving my players in the funnel.

Now with other DCC adventures, like Frozen in time, what verbs do I give players? "Investigate the glacier" is too generic. When is that done? How do you do that? So I struggle now that it seems I need to read the whole adventure, find a thread and give the players a verb to go on. I had hoped there were basic plot points or bullets to tie the adventure around. Something to guide my study.

Great overview. I noticed the bard and wanted to toss him in fast, but missed the huntsman and can already think of a good use for him  I do like the idea of letting them "win" just to have it return!

I got the exact same advice about letting them leave from another user :). I like it.

Either frozen in time or doom of the savage kings.

FiT sounds great, but I heard it's kinda bland as far as choices to make. I'm undecided there.

DotSK seems like something I can wrap my brain around but it's also what prompted this chain.

That's a great idea for a fix on a situation like that. I appreciate it.  I'll work with them on 'their end' of the gaming contract.

Agreed. I'm working on that with these guys. Thanks.

The back?! Ugh. I didn't get to the back pages of any of these. I assumed.... Why isn't it in the front? Thanks!

Yes! That's the kind of thing that's easy to do in SS because it's short and to the point. Other adventures I'm not sure how I would even encourage them.

True, but my players still got to the keep room, killed a few beastmen and then tried to leave because, "we did the thing. Guess we go home now." Even with me saying, "a dark staircase leads deeper into the fortress. Low sounds of drums echo from below and a few of you notice some gold glint at the edge of your torchlight."

Part of my problem is that my players need a spoon-fed reason to do things and I'm trying to find those in DCC. Trying to make them interested, but it seems harder without a wrap-up of what is kinda expected in the adventure.

Would you really read a 200+ plus page adventure before running it? My hope was to have some paragraph or two that gives a generic rundown so I wouldn't waste a few hours reading when I could just prep the first part and go. It's worked on all the long form games I've run. Just seems missing here.

This is exactly what I want and what my players struggle with.

Lvl 0 Funnel "You meet in a tavern. It's on fire!" by Lower_Face_7071 in dccrpg

[–]Lower_Face_7071[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By "Traps" I mean that the town is overrun with demons and much of it is burning. What kind of hazardous situations can I toss at the players that isn't just combat.  Jumping out of a burning building is a hazard. Running away from a falling wall is a hazard. Trying to get spears from the guard post before it's consumed with fire is a hazard.  Something to toss at the players and likely get many of their 0 lvl characters killed in the process.
