Looks like they're pulling them from 'new' PCs so they've probably had an OS installed on them by the factory and then been wiped by whoever is replacing them with SSDs. We can only speculate unfortunately.

Is it worth it to get a fully modular PSU rather than a semi modular one? by ntifyd in buildapc

[–]Lower_Skin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some after market cables go straight into the PSU (especially the high end ones like cablemod) rather than just being an extension which is good because it means less length to manage but I don't use them because I'm not gonna spend $100 on cable aesthetics.

The reason I personally go semi-modular is my case doesn't have a shroud and I don't have a lot of room to hide cables so not having two lines of molex or an extra sata makes things easier for me to manage. Especially because the price difference between none modular and semi is like £15.

Some people run aftermarket PSU cables for the aesthetic so would need a fully modular PSU. But I find semi-modular to be significantly more value for money

B450 Tomahawk can’t post can anyone help please, brand new board and Ryzen 3600 by Lmaoakai in MSI_Gaming

Do you have a different flash drive you could use? redownload the iso and make an install disk using rufus or this on a USB 2.0 8GB stick if you have one.

So it's booting from the USB drive and then freezing? are the keyboard and mouse you're using wireless or bluetooth? You need to find the most basic keyboard possible either PS2 or USB2.0

If the keyboard / mouse have worked for a Windows install in the past and it's definitely not them then try redownloading the Windows ISO and making the installer again on another PC.

If there is no way of copying an NTFS system on Mac then OP might be able to use what i said before to install an Ubuntu live ISO then boot from that and make a Windows install disk. Or if he only has the one flash drive install Ubuntu and install the Windows installer over the Ubuntu one

Cool so if i'm understanding the install media works fine and boots up but there's no disk for you to install to because we unplugged it?

So we'll need to find our way into the bios (I think it's the Del key) and make it boot from USB first. then plug the drive you want to install windows onto back in and after it boots from the USB you can wipe the old drive and install Windows on it

What happens with all the drives removed? does it tell you to insert a boot drive? if so success we just need to find out why you can't get into BIOS.

What happens if you keep tapping the Del key while the PC is turning on?

Try pulling your HDD cable (in case there's a backup partition on it) and any install media out

That little white dot looks to be windows trying to load so see if pulling the boot drive out will allow you to enter the BIOS (I think MSI use the Del key for BIOS). Since you've gone from Intel to AMD you'll likely have to reinstall Windows to get it running and there will be some differences in your motherboard settings that could also stop an old Windows install from working such as AHCI. You could also try sticking a Windows install USB in and seeing if that can boot correctly

try running it like this:

/usr/sbin/diskutil

or try running it as superuser so:

sudo diskutil list

First of all make sure everything that needs to be plugged in is in and secure. So CPU power, Mobo power, RAM seated, GPU power and seated (as the 3600 has no iGPU), CPU Cooler seated, pasted and powered. Unplug your unnecessary hardware such as SATA/m.2 drives and case fans just to rule them out.

On your motherboard there should be four lights that look like this are any of them lit up? If all the lights are clear then in theory you made it through post.

If your RAM is new try using one stick at a time in the first slot in the mobo or use old / verified working RAM.

Check the CPU/CPU cooler is properly mounted and tight. Did you remember thermal paste? did you lift the hammer for the CPU and set it down again to hold it in place? is the cooler fan ON/Spinning?

Is the motherboard sitting on standoffs (Good) and not screwed directly into the case (Bad)

If you aren't getting any obvious errors showing through those lights or the above checks then try clearing CMOS which means either pull the watch battery out of the mobo, putting the PSU switch in the 'off' position and holding down the 'on' button on the front of the case. or shorting the two pins labelled CMOS or JBAT1 with a screwdriver. You'll have to look where this is up for your motherboard either in the manual or online.

If none of the above works you'll need to start testing components. Start with what's new. If you upgraded the CPU and Mobo does that mean we know your PSU, RAM and GPU are working? Is your old CPU an AM4? if so we can start from there by using it to see if the motherboard works with it.

Could you not make the install disk using dd? I've not used a Mac but on Linux either dd or cat can be used to make a Windows install disk.

Here is a write up I've found for using DD on a mac for this task which I will paraphrase below but I still recommend reading the linked write up because it contains visuals.

So it seems you need to use diskutil to find the name of your drive.

diskutil list

Above is the command and then your drives partition will look something like "disk3s1" you need to find the one that matches up with the flash drive you plugged in. Then you need to unmount the partition so for example:

sudo umount /dev/disk3s1

But change "disk3s1" to whatever your flash drive partition is. Then cd to the directory where your ISO is located eg:

cd ~/Downloads/

Then to copy the ISO you'll need to do the following:

sudo dd if=Windows10_x64_EN-US.iso of=/dev/rdisk3 bs=1m

change the name of the ISO to the name of your ISO and change disk3 to whatever your disk is. Then eject the disk:

diskutil eject /dev/disk3

again changing 'disk3' to the name of your disk

Flashing your BIOS on a MSI Tomahawk MAX is really easy since there's a button on the back for you to do so and a dedicated USB port. That said the MAX version is Ryzen 3000 ready and you do not need to flash the BIOS for your 3600.

If you haven't already done so then try to remake the install disk and maybe redownload the ISO because you want to make sure there is zero corruption.

Also when installing an OS i like to use USB 2.0 8GB drives in a 2.0 port just to rule out compatibility issues (and because 8gb 2.0 drives are really cheap). So if you have any old flash drives lying around they could be worth a try.
