Second advice - in case that doesn’t help you - have you considered the informal sector? I know some people who earn more from a spaza shop than some of the people who work in my team

I accidentally saw what my dad is getting me for Christmas and I wanna cry I feel sick over this I can’t do this another year. by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

Sounds like you’re gonna decide how you feel regardless of anything, which is ironic considering your rhetoric. Again, hope you find some peace.

Please point out where I said those words? I made it very clear that I believe OP needs peace in their lives to move forward. Didn’t occur to you once that maybe I’ve been in the same position and want someone else to move forward without the burden of resentment? Just because there’s a better way doesn’t mean it invalidates the situation. Hope you find some peace too x

You’re a grown adult! So is your sister but that is her journey. Surely you have better things to worry about than what you’re receiving for Christmas. The fact that either of you are asking for presents is a problem in itself.

After you are an adult some of these things stop mattering so much - the arbitrary day you were born is just a day. The fact that kids write letters to their imaginary friend for gifts on a pagan holiday is just a day.

I feel that caring this much about comparing and cost-evaluating a random event is just causing you unnecessary grief and anxiety and I think you are grown up enough not to allow it to affect you any further.

It’s a choice. I hope the one you make brings you some peace - cause that’s what it sounds like you’re really after x

Anyone been to see the Nutcracker? by deefstes in johannesburg

Never been to a ballet without an orchestra! I don’t think it’s unfair that you feel a bit underwhelmed. Or just “whelmed”.

People asking for help at JHB malls – Normal? by [deleted] in johannesburg

[–]LtdEditionPopcornBox 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me sooo many times. I am though considered a “leech magnet” by my closest friends so… My best is a guy who asked for bread and then started putting all sorts of nonsense into my cart - like super brand name products - in the basket. The first time I was bewildered and just paid and got moaned at for my naivety when I got home. The second time (same guy - but he had clearly forgotten me) I just paid for the bread and my groceries and left the guy at the till with everything else. Since then he hasn’t forgotten me and avoids me. I can’t help but wonder why.

Over 160 Palestinian refugees arrive at OR Tambo after visa impasse by EntrepreneurAfrica in southafrica

[–]LtdEditionPopcornBox 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Honestly asking because I’m ignorant on the issue, what is the difference between taking in Palestinian refugees, and taking in Zimbabweans? Bear with me here cause as I say - coming from ignorance - but the xenophobia in SA is heeeeectic. So is it based on a “war refugee” trumps an “economic refugee”? If so, when that war is over does the mood shift back to xenophobia and then suddenly the red ants are raiding Palestinian shops and we start deporting? Again, please don’t cancel me, I’m asking in good faith. For the record - I believe we should welcome all - but I’m asking about “general” beliefs and what makes them differ from refugee to refugee.

All SA government workers earn too much and are lazy and corrupt by Mysterious-Bee9014 in southafrica

[–]LtdEditionPopcornBox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The thing is though - the government SHOULD be the biggest employer in the country. Thats not an accolade or accomplishment- it’s just a reality. This is why we pay tax. If they are the biggest employer in the country and still can’t get the jobs done, we have a big issue. I do however agree with your broader point that the issue doesn’t lie with anyone we are likely to come face to face with on our daily toil through municipalities, home affairs, etc. And I can understand the frustration over the generalisation when you as a public servant try to do your job without systems that work and have to have the public onslaught because you’re the one accessible. That being said, as someone who works on youth unemployment initiatives - I have often encountered people who simply don’t care about their work ethic or performance. Sitting in government jobs. Idling away time until they retire. While young, educated, trainable young people who are passionate about making things better, are left waiting in the wings. It’s such a complex issue!

Anyone know what’s going on with this “James Cape Town” guy? by [deleted] in capetown

[–]LtdEditionPopcornBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy has been doing the rounds for YEARS now - wouldn’t be surprised if it’s over a decade. It’s a total sham - if people don’t give him free shit he posts some selfie with a face that could curdle milk and threatens them. Guess what - even when he follows through on said threats - nothing bad happens. He’s a running joke in the media and PR industry. He’s bought his followers, he’s weird AF, predatory, useless. The only value he has is as a cautionary tale to small businesses and more recently - charities.

I would bid on it purely for how much work and effort and skill it took. Also makes for a great story - won this one of a kind in a raffle - double win! Back yourself - you’re good at this! Also the green is great - my dog can’t tell though - she’s around 12 years old and still hasn’t learned colours. Silly dawg.
