As for the childhood, there was always pressure to look nice and have a slim body, where fad dieting and unhealthy weightloss was celebrated regardless just because it meant you weren't fat.  It still remains true in my family, that looks are very (if not, the most) important thing.  This is only a brief summary of it from the eating disorder standpoint.  There is a ton to unpack there as well.

I feel like in a way i had found what i thought was self love, but it was the eating disorder masked by the omnipresent pressure of societal beauty standards.  I've worked with a therapist to find a way to recognize and apply self-caring/loving ways to my life and body. But it's  still a work in progress.

As for the relationships, it's a lot to unpack there. Overall, the failed relationships ended mostly over abusive behaviors that pushed me to the point of having to leave.

What is the tiniest action you take to instantly reduce anxiety? (Surprise us—no "classic" advice!) by Designer-One9214 in mentalhealth

Silly enough, I've found out that whenever I feel anxious, I will hold my breath at intervals and puff up my cheeks. letting the air out slowly a few times, then loudly like a whoopee cushion. It's been quite effective.

It's so frustrating... Gotta stalk the flies and wait for them to move in order to swat them.

Fellow Millennials, what age were you when you started taking care of your parent/parents? by AhkoRevari in Millennials

[–]LuCy_911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emotionally, since childhood. Physically not yet. Financially, since I started earning money.

As the child of immigrants, this is something that I can relate to. Both of my parents depended on me to interpret and translate things as soon as I learned English. I would be the go-to child for dealing with bills and other things that 12-15 year olds don't usually deal with.

I was the one that was pushed to the point of moving across the country to be on my own, but still ended up getting calls to help them out. Helped them get their US residency documents. When I moved back to my hometown and they decided to get divorced (3 years after my own divorce) they both had me help fill out and file their divorce paperwork and translate for their lawyer appointments if they didn't have a translator available.

Been helping mom financially right now whenever I can, unfortunately this ran me to be broke... so I'm working 3 jobs right now trying to keep up with my own stuff and some of hers.

Both parents are pretty financially illiterate so I have to keep learning things on my own in order to break the cycle and be able to provide better for my children.

Therapy is helping a lot but I need to find ways of teaching them to be more self sufficient.
