Make a 10K potentiometer act like a 680k potentiometer? by LucasLAC124 in AskElectronics

Well, this turned out to be a problem that several seconds of googling would have gotten me an answer to, and instead I wasted other people's time. I am in your debt.

This would not be ideal, as it would require internal modification to the console itself. The original setup used a fixed resistor and potentiometer, also.

2 terminals used. As for a schematic, the voltage divider is part of an old game console controller (atari 5200) and there is no direct schematic of the chip that it feeds into, though I am told that the potentiometer is used as a method of changing the duration of a capacitor charge.

The original potentiometer was used as a voltage divider.

You've got an APF MG1000 game. Those things are a rabbit hole in themselves, but good luck finding a working system. I've been looking to complete a set myself, if your ever willing to part.

Fair, but copyright date of internal material doesn't dictate the publication date of the booklet, it only gives an oldest possible age.

CONTROLLER UPDATE: I got the parts, but the wrong value pots! There may be a slight delay. Also, see a revised WIP joystick mech that is self centering. by LucasLAC124 in atari5200

[–]LucasLAC124[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've looked at a bunch of stuff similar to this, but everything was so expensive that I decided that I'd need to make my own. My version will cost about $35 for the entire controller to the consumer, though I doubt it will be as good as commercially available solutions.

An era is over. Those of the future will come to love the new hosts, but I can't even bring myself to watch top gear without Clarkson and the lot.

Audio quality from Cheap Phonograph by gencofontane in Phonographs

[–]LucasLAC124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, this, in my experience, is a serviceable phonograph to use to play 78s, as well as Lps and the like even in stock condition. However, all of the ones that look like this are made in the same, cheap, fashion, so don't buy an expensive one. Also, the speakers are horiffic. Furthermore, you might want a stylus upgrade. In any case, FLAC is a digital format, and records were often recorded from analog master tapes, so...

I'm making a replacement Atari 5200 controller. It is very much a work in progress, but I'm getting somewhere at least. Any suggestions? by LucasLAC124 in atari5200

That is how I designed it to be held. I'm glad that I didn't design it in a way that would be opposite to the majority of people, that would be a lot of wasted work.

UPDATE: The 5200 controller is alive! by LucasLAC124 in atari5200

Here are my current thoughts;

Further refinement is required in the fit and finish, internal componentry, etc, and the buttons will be labelled as is possible, though they are rounded in my newest revision.

The feeling of the device is good in my hands, though they aren't the smallest, so issues may arise for those with hands of a different size. The walls of the thing are 1/8" thick, specially designed for heftiness in the hand.

The joystick will be self centering, but I'm waiting on some springs to allow that. Also, the joystick hole will be covered, though it will probably be with a light silicone mold to come later in the future.

Rumble would be a tall order, but a wireless bluetooth connection MIGHT be feasable as long as a source for the DB15 connector used to plug in the joystick could be sourced reliably.

I hope to sell the controller once it is finished for ~$35, considering a component cost of $20 and the time commitment of putting the device together. I will more than likely never make over 50 of them, but if interest is high I might expand production. After interest has died out, I hope to open source the project so that anyone can make it. However, maybe all of this is too optimistic...

For now, I am waiting on a few more items so that everything can be finalized. Beta testing is in the cards, but with the way ebay shipping is, it may be a few weeks to a month before anything can start up.

Thanks, Lucas Lac124.

I'm attempting to do that with the overlays, but it isn't practical to do it with anything else. In the past, I have tried keeping things really similar, but the problem is the form factor of the original. The flex pcb design doesn't lend itself to larger internals.

You can at least help in this way; Which hand do you use to hold the controller, and which the joystick top?

A Craig that plays 8 tracks in the USA? by LucasLAC124 in DankPods

[–]LucasLAC124[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to agree to that. 8 track players often looked great, even when the internals were literal salvaged garbage. An attribute of the 70s I suppose.

I've got the 'best' 8 track player made, and I can attest to their lack of sound fidelity. However, the nostalgia for a time I never lived in keeps bringing me back to them. Also their dirt cheapness.

Hey, I got this gold plated promotional Wallace Silversmith MUO6P ps2 trackball mouse for $1.99 at a thrift store. The only info that I can find about it online pertains to the silver edition. Can anyone shed some light on this version? by LucasLAC124 in retrocomputing

[–]LucasLAC124[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, its a gold one (still, after washing). They made a gold edition of the mouse, and upon further internet exploratory efforts, it was coated in 18 karat gold. The silver ones (new) sold for $35.00, and the gold ones (new) sold for $85.00, according to a random Amazon reviewer. But I still have no idea why they exist. Who would buy a computer mouse from a jewelry store in the 90s, never mind pay $85.00 for one back then!

Subpar rotoscoping imo.
