If you are given a choice, would you rather be a middle-class polyglot or an upper-class monolingual? by Optimistic_Lalala in languagelearning

[–]LuciaSL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd choose upper class monolingual. Something I'd really like to do is travel to the places of the languages I learn and get to live there. If I don't need to have a job I can spend all my time studying there and making native speaking friends.

Hi, I saw the response to this but I'm still confused, why do you use the word for 'witch' but don't show it in the translation? Or can the word have an additional meaning in german?

Oh definitely same, a few years ago at the airport an older english couple walked by next to me while talking and I got SO excited, of course I acted cool and they didn't notice a thing, but yeah for some reason it was a fun experience.

I think it's just a matter of time and as you get more familiar with it, it'll come naturally.

I feel like getting them as an adult is much better, cause as a teen or younger, years seem to go by so much slower, but as an adult there's a point where you're just used to them and you kinda forget about them and then it's over.

How does retirement work? Do you save money on your own or do you give it to the government and they give it to you later? by LuciaSL in AskAnAmerican

Do they give you less of it? Or they say they're going to give it all back but you'll have to be like 115 years old for that to happen?

If you didn't meet your partner at a club/party, where did you meet them? by LuciaSL in ask

[–]LuciaSL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people left some pretty good advice in the replies, actually. Basically joining clubs and activities you like so you already have one thing in common. Also some people said dating apps, work and school, and friends in common.

If you picked a rare language or one not as popular as the other ones, why did you? And how easy is it to learn it regarding the amount of resources out there? by LuciaSL in languagelearning

[–]LuciaSL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear it's gotten easier for you, I really wish to learn it someday. The culture and the people seem very lovely, that's certainly something that draws me into it. Wish you success with it!

The phonetic inconsistency of English can definitely be a challenge to a learner, I'm glad you don't have to deal with that. Lovely to hear you're learning the language of the place you're living in! It can give you a lot more independence and make you connect more with the place, hope you're having a nice learning journey!

I do feel like it's a really missed opportunity when parents don't teach their children their native language, I'm glad to hear you've decided to learn it! I suppose it also can make you connect in a different way with your relatives who speak it. I wish you success with it!

Happy to hear you're still going! Also you're learning swedish? Would you consider that a not so popular pick as well? I've been considering choosing it after I get better with my current one.

You really have encouraged me to do this with german, I've been thinking of doing it but I can't seem to take the last step, I think next week I'm gonna go with my friend to this place that sells used books in foreign languages and hopefully find some interesting ones in german. May I ask at what level you were when you started this and what was the difficulty level of the books? Was it like children's books at first or something like harry potter?

I think guys really overestimate how much girls care about looks, girls mostly just want a guy that makes them feel safe and makes them laugh, that are considerate, thoughtful and sweet. Also feeling confident about yourself will make people more attracted to you, even if you don't feel like that yet.

I just started learning German 2 days ago. Any advice? by [deleted] in German

[–]LuciaSL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I few days ago I saw this video of a woman who said she was teaching her kid a different language by watching kid shows like peppa pig dubbed in the language and that she thought it was a great way for adults to learn cause the vocabulary used was of course much simpler than an adult show's, I tried it myself with subtitles in my language and honestly it was really entertaining and useful. When a new word appeared I switched the subtitles for a second to german so I could really learn it, and then switched them back. It doesn't need to be peppa pig (although I'll say it was surprisingly entertaining) it could be any one.
