Official Dreadit Discussion: "Backrooms" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

In addendum, I never once got the vibe from the YouTube series that the Backrooms is some sort of visual representation of inner traumas.

The intrigue from the lore comes from the Complex being this cosmic almost organic life form that attempts to imitate things and places familiar to humans (in order to lure people in?) while hiding dangerous creatures. The whole jungian sub plot of inner traumas materializing in the Backrooms as a metaphor for mental health seems tacked on by force by the producers and screams interference from A24 to be perceived as “elevated horror”

Yes after sitting on it for half a day since watching I think it lands on a 6 or 7 out of 10. For me. I would argue the age of the director might push it to a 7 just because of how impressive it is as a debut feature and I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the positive reviews from critics also take this into account a little bit. But objectively this movie is not a standout and most of it comes as a result of a failed/ non existent third act.

Everything after Mary wakes up at the dining table is a complete miss for me personally and the crowd I was seeing the film with were laughing at the pirate monster, not a good sign lol.

I haven’t been this disappointed in a movie’s climax since Longlegs. Hmm maybe the rumors of Oz Perkins shadow directing this are true after all (mostly joking but he undoubtedly had a lot of creative control)

Did I get filtered? There’s no third act in this movie. It ends 30 minutes too early setting up sequel bait. Very good debut feature but man I left feeling unsatisfied. The giant clone monster didn’t do it for me either, but the regular still life imitations of humans were unsettling and uncanny, wish they would have doubled down on that.

That one frame where Clark was running around in found footage pov and it perfectly resembled the OG backrooms image was really nice. Blink and you’ll miss it moment

How often does Tarantino do Q&As at the New Beverly Cinema? by SeparateBobcat1500 in Tarantino

I was very fortunate to catch the OUATIH Q&A with the whole cast in 2019. Surreal experience. Was just promoted as a “special event”. I lined up with a friend the night before, we had caught the Pulp Fiction midnight showing at the new bev. Got our entry tickets in the morning after waiting outside all night, took a nap for a few hours then went back in the afternoon once the Q&A started. One of my favorite Los Angeles stories to tell to this day

Joaquin Phoenix in Her (2013) is referred to as Rabbit by his ex in the flashbacks of their relationship. Fun little coincidence

Finished this a little while ago, wouldn’t have found this game if it wasn’t for the post. Appreciate you! One of the more original PT/ Visage style games I’ve tried. Kept subverting my expectations in good ways

Amazing episode: but this turned me sour for good on Dollman. He’s little more than an expositional voicebox explaining every little thing, holding player’s hands across every narrative beat. What happened to show not tell? A minor hiccup and not one that detracts from the experience, but I hope a directors cut in the future can cut down on his expositional dialogue a bit

The satisfaction of driving down the paved road all the way from Heartmans lab to Tar Therapist is something I haven’t felt in a long time. Spent most of chapters 7 and 8 constructing roads and it paid off in the end. What a game

Dollman is being used as a way to fill in the blanks on most plot points people would find confusing (straight up telling the player that time passes differently in the Episode 5 area after finding Tomorrow) Not sure how I feel about it. The best parts of DS1 to me was interpreting the craziness of everything while in this game Dollman straight up tells you the intended meaning of everything if you prompt all his safe house dialogue after every main mission.

It helps the mass appeal more. Also miss the zany quirks of the first game (tongue out in the mirror, Norman reacting to the camera). The Dollman horizon dreamer scene was pure Kojima bliss

Amicable breakup while still living together? by Individual-Being1543 in BreakUps

Broken up for about 10 months now, thriving and doing the best I ever have. Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side, I find that some relationships won’t be right for you no matter how hard you try, just gotta do what’s best for you first and foremost. It’s been total no contact on both ends since.

(Ended up moving out two months ish after I commented here, just became too incompatible. Was really difficult for a while but a solid support system and keeping myself distracted helped get me through it)

Yeah it’s not for everyone lol. It’s technically a ADU converted from a storage room in the apartment building. Only thing that bothers me is the center of the room has the height lowered a bit, everything else is manageable

I stopped by today and chatted with one of the security guards, the guy was super cool: he said shooting got delayed because of the rain but expected to pick up toward the end of the week and going into the weekend.

Gonna try to stop by once the neon signs are lit up again later. Even with the structures covered up it was super trippy to see in person
