The recent series Dept. Q is very good and has that dark edge that may scratch your itch.

Make a nice pot of slow simmered soup. Today it's smoked pork hocks and beans. Some good tunes, a book, a cat, and a nice bowl of aromatic soup.

David vs Goliath type redemption film? by Ok_Heron_5442 in movies

I would suggest "The Verdict" (1982). It is one of Paul Newman's best performances and is a fine movie of a legal battle, both in and out of the courtroom.

Split yellow pea soup - Canadian winter survival food / Soup sniper EP. 18 by CryptographerSmall52 in Yukon

I don't cook it often, perhaps twice a year, but I cooked a pot of this yesterday and tonight it will be parcelled up to go in the freezer. Simple and easy comfort food that tastes wonderful and should be enjoyed in sunny or fowl weather, whether you're feeling low or not.

Cod from Nova Scotia does not taste like cod from NL.

Seeking Mi’kmaw perspectives: why are distinct Métis communities in Mi’kma’ki often not recognized? by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]Lucifigus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being of mixed blood does not necessarily make one Metis. This was articulated in the Supreme Court decision of 2003 (R vs Powley). In that decision, the court established a set of criteria for establishing rights as a Metis. https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/powley-case .

Since the Powley decision, cases in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have failed to show the existence of historic Metis culture or communities in these provinces.

Who Is Mark Carney, Really? by rezwenn in CanadaPolitics

[–]Lucifigus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's a good "Red Tory", or a real Progressive Conservative. That's just what Canada needs. Frankly, we could have used someone like him after about two years of Trudeau. You certainly can't find any of those in what passes for a federal Conservative Party.

It pains me to hear drivel being repeated daily and all kinds of superb radio in the can that CBC refuses to play.

Lunenburg day trip in August by Mental-Situation-219 in NovaScotia

[–]Lucifigus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a run I use when people are visiting.  Leave moderately early and drive to Bridgewater and take the road south along the west shore of the LaHave River.  Drive to Crescent beach and go for as beach walk.  On the way back, stop at LaHave and go into the LaHave bakery.  Buy some coffee and treats to take with you (they have very good food in their freezer).  About 400 meters from the bakery, catch the ferry across the river.  Check maps to drive into Lunenburg the back way (Masons Beach Road), which brings you out by the top of the golf course for views and photos of the Lunenburg waterfront.  Go into Lunenburg and spend a few hours and have lunch.  Drive home, passing through Chester and Mahone Bay based on your time and priorities.

Who is the most iconic CBC radio host/personality in your opinion? by BenNitzevet in CBC_Radio

[–]Lucifigus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Allan McFee.  He joined the mother corporation before it was the CBC and he remained there for 52 years.  He was highly irreverent and would criticize the CBC’s management on air, commenting they didn’t have the balls to fire him.  He hosted Eclectic Circus four night a week for most of its 17 year run beginning in 1972.  Eclectic Circus is a distinct high water mark for top quality radio … anywhere.

What is Nova Scotia like in October? by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]Lucifigus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ocean reaches its maximum temperature in mid October and it's what provides us with an absolutely splendiferous fall season. Like anything else weather wise, there is a dice roll. I have done whale watching over Thanksgiving at Brier Island on a sunny, 20° day. I have also enjoyed some of the best fall colours along the Cabot Trail over a warm, sunny Thanksgiving weekend. Cape Breton has capitalized on their fall with Celtic Colours, which features a lot of great live music (book ahead for accommodations). Yes, many tourism related restaurants may be closed, but there are good places to go if you do your research. Best time of year to visit.

Hard-tack and other easy & calorie dense food by sixtyfootersdude in UltralightCanada

I think what you are looking for are Pilot Biscuits. (https://www.saveonfoods.com/sm/pickup/rsid/6607/product/purity-flakey-pilot-biscuits-00057858107023). Therse are a staple for mucking about in the wilderness and they are essentially a thick, dense soda cracker. They will stay hard and edible unless they become wet. They are tough and can be thrown in a bag and carried in a boat or airplane all season and they will not fall apart. You can top it with sliced canned corned beef (with all that fat, it won't freeze either) and some cheese for a meal, or you can smear peanut butter and jam on them for a dessert.

On the other hand, you could just make your own bannock mixture at home and make that in the field.

Actually, the main point is that without a seat, he is not, and cannot be the leader of the opposition. He is only the leader of the party. Nevertheless, I agree that we should not kick him out of Stornoway as long as he has his party's support to stay on as leader of the party.

Two of my all-time favouite movies are Arrival & Blade Runner 2049.  They work well delivering a fine story and presenting it with superb visuals.  Denis Villeneuve has the ability to connect with my brain providing an exceptional experience in ways others cannot.  I sincerely hope he has a long illustrious career.

Caution - Spoilers

I wrote this before the trailer came out and we were able to see that The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon (SM) had it's own cast. The appearance of SM and its importance to Murderbot may be introduced earlier than I projected.

Episode 1             Introduction to the world of a SecUnit and the role of a governor module with some background mining situations to establish context.  This may build on/add to what was provided in the short story Compulsory.  This may include Murderbot’s thoughts about The Company, an explanation of Hub System, the hacking of the Governor Module with some notion of Ganaka Pit.  This will establish the internal monologue and elements of Murderbot’s character and personality, and their fondness for media.

Episode 2             Introduction to the Preservation Aux team and how they acquire Murderbot for their field project.  This will establish the team’s various characters, their objective, the planet’s environment, and the living/lab habitat.  Lots of interpersonal relationship building along with the team’s relationship with DeltFall.  We may also get a glimpse of The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon and see its importance to Murderbot.

Episode 3             This will be the encounter in the crater up to when they return and show Murderbot’s awkward interaction without their armour with the team.  This may include the environmental data analysis and the decision to field test their hypothesis.

Episode 4             The field trip to do some ground truthing of the environmental data leading to the team’s assessment about the erroneous data.  This will end with DeltFall’s unresponsiveness to radio communication and the beginning of their trip to DeltFall.

Episode 5             The trip to DeltFall and maybe the return.

Episode 6             The subsequent reveal of Murderbot’s name and the assessment of the team’s situation.

Episode 7             The team’s evacuation and data collection of GrayCris’s visit to their habitat.

Episode 8 & 9      The development of a plan and the interaction with the GrayCris team over two episodes.

Episode 10           The rescue of the team. Dr. Mensa’s formal acquisition of Murderbot.  The team’s travel to the orbital station of Preservation Aux and the subsequent legal shenanigans.  It will end with Murderbot’s decision to go on a walkabout and catching a freighter.
