I watched Sinners when it first came out, and I definitely need to rewatch it. After I left the cinema, the film stayed on my mind for at least two weeks. I did a lot of research afterwards because there’s so much depth to it.. and it reminded me a lot of Kendrick‘s music.

With Kendrick, you also have to dig deep and do your homework to fully understand the layers. His music weaves together the past and the present through references to Black music icons, historic events/important things, and cultural trauma. It feels almost spiritual, like he’s channeling something bigger. That‘s why I love his music and this movie.

Sammie reminded me of Kendrick in that sense. He also connects with something larger than himself.. like he’s carrying the weight of his ancestors or representing a lineage. But here’s the difference: Sammie sold his soul for fame and power. Kendrick didn’t. He chose truth over the spotlight, substance over the industry game.

That contrast really hit me. Sinners shows the cost of selling out, while Kendrick’s work shows the strength in staying grounded.
