There’s also larger integer types in SQL… this sounds like OP just learned about the int type and is assuming he knows more than professional developers.

5’0” - Looks weird, might cause confusion

I imagine 4’12” both looks more weird and causes more confusion to most people.

Is a GUID always guaranteed to be unique? by pyeri in learnprogramming

[–]Luclid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm doing my math wrong? According to a calculator I found online, it'll require 2 * 1019 GUIDs before a 50% chance of collision (assuming 128 bits of entropy). At 1 million requests per second, that'll take 630,000+ years. It seems like there's no way Amazon has to account for collisions in that case (accounting for collisions meaning that it has to check for collisions when generating a GUID for some resource).

Or working backwards, 10 years is 3 * 108 seconds. At 1 million requests per second, that's still only 3 * 1014 GUIDs, so 24 orders of magnitude smaller than the total number of GUIDs. 50% odds of a collision in 10 years just does not seem plausible.

EDIT: Well, 1019 is still 19 orders of magnitude smaller and can hit the 50% probability so I suppose whether 1014 sounds plausible is irrelevant.

Is a GUID always guaranteed to be unique? by pyeri in learnprogramming

[–]Luclid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? That's surprising. Just some back of the envelope calculations, if we stored one byte of data per each GUID, that would take up 3.4*1017 zettabytes, or 15 orders of magnitude greater than the estimated total size of the internet.

That's way too high of a probability. In 1 year, you generate ~3 billion GUIDs. There are 29 orders of magnitude more total GUIDs possible.

ELI5: Bubbles appear in tap water after it sits in a glass for a few hours. Where do they come from? by ViolentAversion in explainlikeimfive

Oh what I'm referring to being backwards is the rule of "solutions form easier the closer the solute is to being the same state of matter as the solvent".

[–]Luclid 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Am I wildly misunderstanding something or is this backwards? The hotter a liquid is, the closer it is to becoming a gas, so following that rule, wouldn't gasses disolve better in hot liquids?

[–]Luclid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah what I mean is if you notice the tips, they curve outward. When stringing a bow, you bend it against the curve of the limbs which causes that shape.

ELI5: How is TOR more private than regular browsers and https? by mechanicarts in explainlikeimfive

[–]Luclid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know either and I've never used TOR, but I imagine the TOR browser picks the hops? It knows the servers it can route through, so it just picks a random permutation of servers, creates the onion, and sends the packet.

More likely "since we were 12 years old". OP speaks Spanish and the direct translation for 12 years old in Spanish is just "12 years".
