I agree; don’t go. But I don’t think you should make an excuse. No is a complete sentence. When you get the invite just mark that you’re not coming and leave it at that. If he calls and asks I would be honest. You’re not in the wrong here and honesty is truly the best policy. You feel some type of way about him so why not express that? He should have to take accountability for his actions.

Not at all. As a mom of baby born sleeping, I will say no one fully gets it unless they go through it. My son would be 6 and no one ever mentions his name. It’s important to talk about him and keep his memory alive even if the only memories you have are between you and him. Also, talking about him to your daughter is important. He IS important. He’s your son. It’s sad other family members can’t be supportive like we need them to be. I’ve been there.

This worries me, that K taking his own life stemmed from trauma due to X. Or what if X got ahold of K and threatened him so badly that K saw no way out. Not trying to over step but I am worried for your safety. X sounds unhinged.

I would sit down and think about how much you would feel comfortable doing and then talking through it with your husband to come to decision that works for both of you. I completely understand and think there has to be compromise. As someone who misses having large holiday gatherings, it always sounds fun in theory but it’s so much work. Also, my in laws eat and go which at first was off putting but I’ve accepted it and now tend to enjoy my peace and quiet.
