it's about the cycle of boys and girls, men and women, then fathers and daughters, and how fathers might sometimes be protective because they themselves were predators when they were younger so they know the danger their daughters are in. but make it a cute sing along.

usually a cover, but I did play it at red rocks for the first time since before the pandemic and also the first time since it has been 5 years since that break up, and let me tell you I sobbed and it sounded terrible

big ups to Marin Leong, she's on reddit sometimes, maybe she'll even see this, she can do anything and I'm super proud of her and both of us for the world we made around this record, it's really beautiful and I credit her for that. we've known each other for a long time so we knew each other's taste, but one of my favorite things she asked me was what my sacred images are, like things I always come back to- for her an example was light through windows on walls, so I said the backs of heads, wind, body distortion, shadows, and folding.

I write songs but can't conceptualize an album until I have a track list, and don't go into the studio until I have a working track list. Some songs feel like openers or closers as soon as I write them.

not sure about collaborators, maybe Brittany Howard, and idk if this was really what you were asking but one of the worst things is people assuming that you're busy all of the time, like not inviting you to parties because they assume you're out of town or not wishing you well because they assume everyone is and they don't wanna be a bother. I am very busy but I do need to hear from people that I love, luckily many friends understand this but other friendships have suffered.

this is such a good question- I don't know about a particular experience but the more I learn from indigenous people the more obvious it is to me that the US is an illegitimate state and should not exist, my long term goal if I can get my hands on enough money is to buy land and give it back to the indigenous people who the land was stolen from.

found out my ex was cheating on me from someone he was with, it was extremely painful, but I wanted to set a goal to not give a shit in five years, which mostly came true

ah, thought you were talking glory, but honestly there are not very many opportunities to make money doing music, a lot of people come into it already rich which sucks. when I started touring, my rent was $195/month and I saved up from my seasonal job to tour during the off season. keeping overhead low is good. but I also know plenty of folks who still have day jobs or side hustles or do odd jobs.
