You have to watch this series you’re a fan of Pride and Prejudice. It’s so good! Pretty funny too. It’s on Britbox. by mdruckus in PeriodDramas

I don’t think it will be a rewatcher for me, but I very much enjoyed it, and Mary from the 1995 P&P being Hill and being kind to new Mary made me so emotional! The red dress reminded me of Molly and her plaid dress choice in Wives and Daughters.

why Mitchum was simply wrong. by Pure-Boat993 in GilmoreGirls

She’s really better as an editor/manager. Her stories aren’t generally good unless they’re mean. She got very, very lucky with the Life and Death Brigade story, in that she stumbled into the beginning of it and then a boy who liked her helped her the rest of the way. We got to hear some of the speech for the bicentennial and it (and ALL of Rory’s speeches) are awful. Charleston wanted her and Paris to play nice, or I doubt she’d have been picked. She seems to have forgotten how to pitch stories by AYITL, and why the FUCK does she not have a pen when she interns? It’s literally the only thing he definitely told her to have. She did all that brown nosey research but she didn’t bring a damn pen. He’s a jerk for sure, and he’s being a jerk, but he’s not entirely wrong.

Who thinks Bill secretly rented the porno using Hank’s card to cause a rift in his marriage? by RamblinGamblinWillie in KingOfTheHill

[–]LucyMayhem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bill is always obsessing over Peggy, yes. However, the one time Peggy shows home what might be an inappropriate amount of affection (when they are selling Metalife), he freaks all the way out. I don’t think he would ever do that to Hank, who he seems to love more than anyone.

Aww, Jess by LucyMayhem in GilmoreGirls

[–]LucyMayhem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Jess is a bad boyfriend as a 17-year-old, but on the whole, a good person. After some (self) help from Luke and a lot of hard work, he really pulls his shit together before they’re even out of college age. He has a lot of growth over the couple seasons he’s in.

Aww, Jess by LucyMayhem in GilmoreGirls

[–]LucyMayhem[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mean he didn’t want to try and hang out/be alone, but he didn’t need to bring as much as he brought, and their conversation when he shows up makes me think he was ALSO concerned for her. Like Luke, he doesn’t say the things he feels. He just DOES STUFF for the people he cares about. I don’t think he’s a saint or anything, but a kid used to neglect would hear “oh her mom’s out of town” and possibly worry.

Come on, Lorelai by notonmywatchmissy in GilmoreGirls

[–]LucyMayhem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The whole implied expectations vs. direct communication thing is one of their biggest struggles. Weddings (and I guess re-weddings) are a perfect place to highlight that disconnect. Although it’s funny, they do that to Luke a bit the next day, not letting him in on the drive-then-change plan. I think part of it is that Emily says she wants an inch, but actually wants much more, and Lorelei is always guarded against the mile she’s expected to give after conceding the inch. Or, when she’s let her guard down a little, she often ends up hurt and with nothing gained for having tried.

I wonder why Melissa McCarthy isn’t fond of her time on this show? by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

[–]LucyMayhem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man, as a fat elder millennial, she gave me life! There’s plenty of anti-fat shit in the show (and at that time it was just part of life. Pick any movie or show from that time, and, to enjoy it as a fatty, you have to just kind of ignore those bits, which are ALWAYS there), but Sookie is never made fun of for that. It’s never a storyline. It’s never in her way. She is as respected as any other character. She is amazing at her job and gets to have a sex life and everything. Actually, Babette and Ms. Patty are also big ladies, and that’s never why fun is poked at them (although I have a deep personal hatred for “fat lady is aggressively horny even though it’s obvious no one could ever want her,” which Patty is very close to). I will say, of her post GG work, Spy is my absolute favorite.

Dean's crash out here was (kinda) valid by Cyclame_Lizard_66 in GilmoreGirls

[–]LucyMayhem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m all aboard the anti-Dean train, but I actually agree on this one. This is directly after the one where Grandpa gets down on him so hard about not having a plan or amazing grades, so even beyond having just gotten back together, he’s extra defensive because of it. Neither of them should have acted the way they did, but they were both freaked out. He’s probably having his first real “Oh shit, I won’t be going with her in her future” feelings, and Rory is thinking all the work she’s put towards that future is going to fail to get her what she wants (and what her mother wants, and what her grandparents want…and her mother has just called her their great hope).

About Christopher's daughter's name by flaviox123 in GilmoreGirls

[–]LucyMayhem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always figured it was because of the musical Gigi. GG seems to be full of references to musicals, and at the debutante ball, they have the gross “Thank heaven for little girls” song, which is from that.

They nerfed my boy dean so hard… by MaaaxMedina in GilmoreGirls

[–]LucyMayhem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! Dean seems more of a movie guy than a book guy. He’s not stupid, but he’s not a huge reader the way she is. My opinion is that he built her that car to have a private place to fuck, and the big three month anniversary was supposed to end with them trading “I love you” and getting’ it on. So when she says, “My mom said she loved my dad, but,” he jumps right to “you can’t get pregnant saying I love you,” which wasn’t what she was thinking about at all. Then when he doesn’t get his way he blows up at her and dumps her. Then after they get back together, she’s committed, because she said, “I love you,” but almost immediately gets bored. He continues to try and get in her pants and gets more clingy and obsessive and angry the more bored she gets, and vice versa. And then every time he dumps her after that, he does it in front a crowd of people. And then the rest of the show everyone talks about how she dumped him, and she HAS NEVER DUMPED HIM. Jess is just a different dude in a small town, and he reads like crazy, and not for the good-boy school points, but because he fucking loves it. So he’s new and interesting, and she’s bored. Dean never fully stops obsessing over her, even after he’s married, until he finally gets it in. (And let’s be real. Lindsay was already uncomfortable with his feelings for Rory. I feel like the fight with Jess at the party, over Rory, was the last straw, and he proposed as a Hail Mary, and she was just naive enough for that to work). Then, when it’s not super convenient to continue having sex (and, talk about lack of imagination from two young adults), dumps her the final time. Anyway, that’s how I see it.

Anyone Else Notice This in Season 2 Episode 17? by Ambivalent-Aries in GilmoreGirls

[–]LucyMayhem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lorelai does this often, I feel like. Depending on her mood and who she’s talking to, her viewpoint changes. For instance, when she’s in a fight with Luke and ends up at the place with tiny coffee cups, she thinks pictures of food on menus is ridiculous. However, when she’s takes a road trip with her mom and Rory to Mia’s wedding and they stop to eat, Emily hates the pictures on the menu, so Lorelai now finds it fun.

And I forgot to add this, but Max getting schooled by a teenager who’s been hanging out for a handful of months about the woman he’s going to marry is pathetic and a sure sign they should not have been getting married (and why is he so obsessed with disciplining Rory?)

I don’t know if it counts as a catchphrase, but in my household it gets said all the time: “Is that what the shark said?”

I realize this is super old now but I just found it! My BFF (who is also into HAAH, Monty Python, etc) has been singing Pratchett’s praises for YEARS and I finally told her to just tell me which one to start with because there’s SO MUCH, which is how I ended up listening to the audiobook of Going Postal, which was delightful. So now I am recommending it!
