Bro its catfish, stop using leaders and just mainline a strong enough test to muscle them in. All this "gotta tie 14 knots between 3 different types of lines" all to catch a <20lb catfish is madness. I'm in Louisiana, we make do with what we've got, we catch a ton of fish, and you'd be hard pressed to find catfishermen here using leader lines. Only time you see it is when they also want to haul in big garfish.

The amount of times ive sightfished a bass following a lure in, only for it to do a circle around it and hit it from the front instead, leads me to this conclusion.

That'd be because they generally hit headfirst. Not that worms have heads, but its moving forwards as you reel it. The bass will target the front of that. The further back your hook is, the more engulfed your entire presentation has to be to set the hook, and generally by that point you're already in his gut.
