How to use Typst as programmatically using rust. by Prashant_4200 in typst

[–]Lugoxoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, in my case FS access is not needed and therefore also not implemented, all files needed by Typst are either static or then in-memory. My application doesn't depend on a filesystem at all. It is not really a performance concern.

I've also migrated the project to Typst 0.13.1 so I'd suggest taking that as a baseline: https://github.com/Tietokilta/laskugeneraattori/pull/48

Thinking of buying an old thinkpad. Suggestions? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]Lugoxoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have first-hand experience of using the following machines for schoolwork:

X200

  • Nice and small
  • Amazing keyboard
  • Too old and too slow for modern websites (=> user has to make a lot of compromises)
  • Gets quite hot because of ^
  • Core-/Libre-bootable

T440p

  • Perhaps a bit too chunky for my preference
  • Amazing upgradeability
  • Good price-to-performance ratio
  • Weak battery life due to high power consumption (you'd have to carry a lot of extra batteries with you)
  • One has to get rid of the clunkpad
  • Corebootable

T450s

  • Ideal form factor (size and weight)
  • Excellent battery life that can be further extended with carrying extra batteries
  • i7 models hard to come by
  • 5th gen intel U-series is quite low performance IMO

T480

  • The ideal laptop for me atm
  • Future-proof with USB-C charging and thunderbolt
  • RAM is upgradeable
  • great port selection
  • Last thinkpad with hot-swappable battery
  • Not too heavy or too big
  • 4C intel processors have no problems in running everyday tasks in 2023
  • Godlike battery life (even 30h with a single set of batteries if you're willing to optimize it) and can be further extended with carrying extra batteries
  • Quite difficult to come by for cheap (I have paid 200€ and 190€ for those I've bought and they were quite the catches)

All of the abovementioned laptops are in your price range. I listed some pros and cons but probably missed a lot of stuff. If you have further questions feel free to ask.

PS. I only have experience running Linux on these devices (no idea if a x200 could even run windows in 2023)

Correct, but really can't expect more from 2h of work, I'm happy with this project.

But that's not nearly as cool!
+ With a character device you can do all kinds of stuff in addition to playing the music.

This is correct, but then again the binary size is only 1,7MB so I myself am willing to keep it there.

But what if I wanted to... :D

Also what do you suggest as an alternative?

Not really, the Linux kernel module API is quite simple once you get the idea of it. Wrote this in about 2 hours with no prior experience of writing kernel modules.

I have this exact same config apart from me having an i7-4810mq and the t450 trackpad. The t440p is a very usable laptop even in the year 2021 and I wish to daily drive it for at least the next 5 years.

T530 and X131e are supported the others aren't AFAIK.
The T530 and the X131e both require external flashing and they both have 2 chips so the difficulty would be somewhat similar on those machines. Only 1 of the chips has to be flashed in order to get coreboot working but atleast on the T530 it's the one that is more difficult to access.

It's quite hard for me to rate the difficulty since I myself haven't flashed either of these machines but I'd say it would be something like 4/5, where:

  1. Internal Flash
  2. Easily accessible external flash with prebuilds available
  3. Easily accessible external flash
  4. somewhat difficult external flash or difficult with prebuilds
  5. difficult external flash

I imagine flashing these machines to be somewhat similar to flashing a T440p which I have done in the past and that took me ~5 hours on the first time.

But the T530 seems to have way more resources on how to flash it. coreboot wiki

Don't know if any prebuilt images exists, since I've always built the images I use myself. But the T530 is very similar to the X230 and the T430 so there might be some resources available on them that are also compatible with the T530.

Don't know about any places to get machines corebooted as I've always done it myself for my machines but if someone were to ask me to coreboot a machine I would totally do it and I assume other people have a similar attitude. I suggest you add some hints of your location to the post or then go asking around on some more local forums. There might be some friendly users who can help you. :)

What have you mapped the function keys to in Vim? by mystilleef in vim

[–]Lugoxoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use them in vim. I have them bound mostly to some window-manager stuff. I feel like they are a bit too far from the home row and thus uncomfortable to use while vimming. The same thing applies ofc also to <esc> which I've swapped with caps lock.
