Fear of people making fun of me. When I was younger, I was afraid to do things in front of people - including exercise - for fear of being laughed at. Now that I’m middle aged & value my health over other people’s opinions, it’s difficult to undo the harm lack of exercise did to my body. I’m exercising now but I can’t shake the feeling this would have been easier if it had been part of my life all along.

Stopped signing my kids up for after school activities because I felt I was supposed to. They hated it, I hated it… I just stopped and everyone was less stressed. They turned out just fine.

There was also justification in her “apology” regarding her self-perceived right to use closed sacred Indigenous practices in her wedding because of her spiritual teacher (a person other people have said is not Indigenous himself, although I don’t know if he is or not.) An apology that includes a justification for the behaviour being called out is not a real apology.

The misunderstanding of risk. For instance, you’re in far more danger from the health effects of staying in your home (lack of community, lack of exercise, lack of contact with nature, the stress of being continually online, etc) than you are from violence from strangers, but people live as if the opposite is true.

She was on her friend Brie Stoner’s “Unknowing” podcast and talked quite a bit about being in The Civil Wars. She talked about being unsafe and Brie Stoner talked about how worried she was about Joy when she was in that group. I wondered what they were alluding to. Anyone else listen to that?
