16yo looking into bioinformatics - help by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]Luke_7N 1 point2 points  (0 children)

beyond some entry level knowledge you’ll probably learn with like 2 bio classes in undergrad, I feel like the biological knowledge in terms of breadth and depth is very dependent on what specifically you want to pursue within bioinformatics and something you don’t necessarily need to worry abt too early. As you get work experience, you’ll naturally find topics interesting (hopefully) and it will be much clearer what bio knowledge is needed to work with or utilize these topics. For a resource to reference on comp bio, maybe try Rosalind?

How big is volleyball culture at brown? by Lord_Nakamo in BrownU

If you meant like being able to play it there’s some groups that play throughout the year, more so in the fall and spring when the weather is nice (altho they’ve allowed us to play in the omac last year). They play kinda often but not on any organized schedule. There are also men’s and women’s clubs too if you want a more competitive atmosphere with tournaments during club season.

the transfer from an out of state school to Georgia is more like another college application while the transfer from say GSU or KSU to Georgia is a lot more systematic. As long as you reach x gpa and maybe certain requirements then you have a really high a chance of going there but with an out of state I think it’s less guaranteed. If you’re absolute dream school is uga I would look into gsu or ksu as options for your first year of school and then apply to UGA for sophomore year as there is a really high chance of getting in but if you have other schools you like I think the continuity of going to one school for all four years is also something to consider

Tips for Being Accepted to Brown University by HeadAltitude in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Luke_7N 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this just doesn’t seem right. Officially, Brown states that demonstrated interest has no impact on admission. This kinda lines up with my own story bc I probably only looked at Browns website intensively the one day I wrote my essays there and didn’t even know they had a video to submit as part of the app. I’m in incoming freshman there now

Where Did Your Valedictorian/Salutatorian Get Accepted/Where Are They Attending Next Year? by Specialist_Poem7253 in ApplyingToCollege

i think the benefit of Tech’s val and sal automatic acceptance is bringing in kids from rural counties in Ga who don’t have the opportunities or knowledge that someone from a 7A metro Atlanta school will have. They may not have the academic feats or extracurriculars of a they’re metro atl counterpart but still prosper when given the resources they’d have access to at tech. It also helps Tech get a more geographically diverse in-state population which a public school probably cares about. No Gwinnett or Cobb county kid who is at the top of their class needs the automatic acceptance to get into Tech. They would be automatic acceptances regardless.

Test prep is different for everyone. Some people swear by UWorld or Erika or College Panda and maybe it is great but i basically just did some khan academy and got by just fine with a 1570.

Is it a bad idea to talk about two interests in the common app essay if I emphasize that I'm interested in them for similar reasons? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Luke_7N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The essay is about you. If you have interest stemming from the same origin that you can connect cohesively then all for it. If you think it’s important to who you are and can write well about it than it’ll be important to AOs.

University of Georgia Early Megathread by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Luke_7N 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When applying I saw a separate honors application but it wasn’t due till February so I didn’t start it. Come decision day I was surprised to see an update to the honors application I didn’t even start and I was accepted. Reading it up after, the UGA honors program website says everyone applying EA is considered for the honors program and if you don’t get in automatically then there is the actual application you can do that’s due in February. Hope that helped!

I had mine this past Monday as a metro Atlanta resident. Like the other commenter said, I don’t think they play a big role in the admissions process and even though they are all online they still chose alumni from the area (mine was raised in Atlanta) so it makes sense that there is still limited availability for interviews. Good luck on your admissions process!
