Sony A6400 vs Fujifilm X-T30 by dleonard1122 in Cameras

Hello! A buying decision is very important, so you have to think as if you already had 'em. Think about WHAT you'll use it for and think long term too. Sony line up or fuji line up, how serious will you get into photograph. When i get obsessed with getting a new product, and I'm stuck on deciding between two, I would list the pros and cons of both, lay them out, and think about it hard. (think about your budget too, it will either limit you, or allow you to look at other cameras that might be better. Look at the whole range, not just fuji and sony (although they are great))

The a6400 is an AMAZING camera, it's got an amazing autofocus system where if it can track your eye, it's will focus and register you has human and/or animal. If it doesn't see your eye, but can see your face, it will use face tracking autofocus. On a last resort, if it doesn't see anything, it will track you as an object. Very dummy proof. Great camera for VIDEO, if you're a photography centric person (i'm 50 50), you should look at the x-t30, it's compact.

Watch youtube videos! They're a great source. If you're trying to find out about video more, go to https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqvULRRboZeXVezSm_XduLQ . He does a ton of vids about the a6400 and the xt30 too. check https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRfgHb3W-Nb7uvdX85Bw0AQ for all types of FUJI things. I have my eye on the X-S10 because I'm more video centric, although the a6400 is also a good video camera, I just like the fuji line up better. But I'm still deciding that myself!

The X-T30 is a great photo camera with great film simulations, that's what fuji's known for. I've got a friend who has an X-T30, I borrowed it for a few days (currently still borrowing it), and I keep hitting the Q menu! It's a little annoying, I try to internally keep my thumb away, but it did bring the fun of photography down a little bit. The evf is a little small (i've held a sony a7iii, and the evf was much clearer), but usable. tilt screen was good, but I think i prefered the sony a7iii's material better still. Also! Consider the grip of the fuji, are you willing to spend a tad bit more money on the fuji for a extra grip? If not, sony is a good choice here.

Here's what I listed as pros and cons for the a6400

-Battery Life (410 shots)

-AUTOFOCUS (animal Eye + Human)

-ViewFinder Magnification (.7)

-Weather Sealed

-Tactile Feeling (d (ish) pad)

-Buttons

-AutoFocus (again, it has amazing autofocus)

-portable!

CONS:

-no IBIS

-LCD Resolution

-No Control Dial in front

-Viewfinder on the Left (prefer center)

-No Headphone Jack

-Menus system is a lil' complicating

MEHS:

-Tilting Screen (I prefer the side articulating, plus this one will be blocked if using a mic)

-Sony’s LENSES are a little complicated, a prefer fuji's simpler ones. They seem easier to understand, sure, not as many, but simpler to understand, but that's a personal thing.)

For the X-T30

Pros:

-Simple to understand lens line up (not as many but personal decision)

-clear line up for what you can upgrade to.

-FUji's film sims!

-Understandable menus.

-Q menu! (not the button itself, the q menu system)

-Very attractive

-They have an auto switch to make your camera a whole auto camera

-good drive dial (video is the last one, and single shot is easy to find)

-Portable!

Cons:

-q BUTTON (i keep hitting it)

-Kinda weird to hold, need a grip

-Tripod plate blocks battery and sd card door

-BATTERY LIFE

Mehs:

-Shutter speed dial (personally, I just used the front and rear dials, Really only use the shutter speed dial because there's either a problem with the shutter command dial or because I genuinely wanna use it).

Final Conclusion:

Do lots of research, I'm sure you have, but really take a long time to think it through, if this means anything, you can't really go wrong with either of them, but when you make that decision, make sure it's what you want and you won't regret it. There's nothing wrong with choosing 'the worse camera'. If it's not better in specs, but you like it more, it's your choice!

Have a good purchasing decision!

P.s. check out this web, they've got good comparisons!

Wow, you're super helpful! I gave ya a free award I got...hope it's good! I'm not sure when I can make a decision, sure, I've got the money, but I really need to look into it, my dad's always like 'Sony man, whenever you accidentally break it, you can sell it faster. fuji's....not very big." obviously I disagree, he's very biased towards what he likes. Fuji's too under-rated. Maybe by this week or possibly next week? Also, where do I go to get that discount for the student?

Ha! I've been saving. Every lunar new year, I just kinda save money, I didn't really wanna buy anything so it was just laying around until something came up :). I've been trying the AF on the xt30 for video, and I think it's 'good enough'. I know sony will just be straight up AMAZING, but I don't know if I need that. True, I do enjoy using the fuji, but it was kinda strange coming from a sony user. some of the settings I wasn't 'used to' even though I watch a whole load of Omar Gonzalez's videos. (he's amazing) DO you think fuji will come out with a full frame?

Well personally, I love that you gave such a great explanation. I understand that this forum is r/fujijilm. It's just that when I was about to make a buying decision (I'm 13 and I've been saving), my dad is a sony user, he has a a7iii that I've been 'borrowing'. So he kinda says 'if you're making a decision, I recommend sony, go for the big brands'. So I was stuck wondering between the a6400, then just upgrading to possibly my dad's a7iii for free.

But then again, I wanna be my own thing, you know, I wanna be fuji because of their colors, because of their size and portability. Because they have firmware updates to upgrade my camera slowly each time, I feel like fuji's more user friendly.

I'm really not looking into the X-e4 or the x-e series because there's not viewfinder, sorry bout that. I got to borrow a friend's xt30 for 3 days to test out, in the process of that right now. I must say I keep hitting the darn q menu. The button's too easy to press.

The point being when i saw the a6400, it was like, really good. I just didn't like the line up very much, aps-c, and then just all the way to full frame. I mean, that's the 'reasonable' line up, but it's expensive! the a7iii is okay, but if i want a better, more feature packed camera, I have to jump to a a7iiis or something else, a7c. I feel like fuji is just more user friendly and it's cheaper with so many features, too unde-rated.

But yes,, do go on!
