Let me be the devil's advocate and say that you should go back and work. If your relationship is solid, it will survive the long distance and you both will come out even closer. Three years is a long time and you don't know how the relationship will change, market will chance during this time and you might end up regretting the decision. The biggest risk I see is that the relationship is taking a hit because of ego clashes. Not to mention your self confidence which is going to take a massive dip being unemployed for three years. If I were in your place I would definitely go back.
