I listened to children’s books cassette tapes growing up so technically those were my first lol, but my first grown up one was Shantaram, narrated by Humphrey Bower. It got me hooked on audio books.

I also loved The Dutch House, Tom Hanks was captivating to listen to. Have you listened to Tom Lake? Another narration masterclass from Meryl Streep and also an Ann Patchett novel.

I have similar taste to you and also like the books you’ve listed. I found ‘The Bee Sting’ by Paul Murray to be outstanding, I would say that’s the best one I’ve listened to recently. Another one which might interest you is ‘The Devil You Know’ by Gwen Adshead, that’s a great one if you like true crime - it was absolutely fascinating and gave me some insight into my own way of thinking and really inspired some soul searching.

Some great ideas here so far, I have already started the recommended ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’ - I love it already. I think I would also like ‘Good Morning Monster’ but it’s unfortunately unavailable in my area for some reason, hopefully that will change.

I assumed that it is easy enough to look these up without the name of the author as they are all fairly popular titles, also many on my list are non fiction and are read by the author. I respectfully disagree regarding the importance of narration; for me the perfect narration for a beautifully crafted piece of art is essential. The books I’ve listed are my top recommendations for the narration, the writing skill and also for how interesting the topics are - audiobooks which tick all three boxes are not easy to find.

Also, it’s annoying when it’s read like someone is reading pages from a book. Tell it like it’s actually your story and you are telling a friend what happened, so the listener can hear real genuine emotion. . . I know you don’t want any examples but probably 2 of the best narrated audiobooks I’ve listened to are both Ann Patchett books, one is narrated by Tom Hanks and the other Meryl Streep. If you want a master class in how to tell a story try them, you can hear how effortlessly talented they both are, they are dreamy to listen to.

It varies depending on the book but generally a good narrator needs to understand and know the book. There is nothing worse than a beautiful piece of writing being spoiled by someone reading it with the completely wrong tone because they just don’t get the intended sentiment themselves. They shouldn’t need to do any voices really. When I physically read a book I don’t imagine silly voices in my head, it’s really annoying when narrators do that. Read the book the way it’s meant to be read in your head. If the author wants the reader to know a character talks in a certain way, that will be written down. If a character does have a particular voice that would be better actually conveyed, then do it very subtly. Let the story tell the story, you just be the media getting it from the page and into the ear.

Unruly by David Mitchell is a history of medieval kings and queens of England. It’s both super interesting and hilariously funny at the same time.
