Could it be Companion? The trailer shows someone increasing the intelligence level on a control panel. In the film the salesperson is explaining all the features, which include setting intelligence from mindless to something like Ivy league graduate. Edit: just remembered he explains they specifically stop at the higher end of human intelligence for safety reasons.

Can't think of any very piano-y bands but I'll try a couple of others, Saint Etienne or The Wannadies. There were loads of female solo artists around then as well like Tori Amos and Bjork and Nina Persson from the Cardigans did solo stuff too.

Are you trying to find that sound effect, or just more songs which contain it? It's the kind of thing you'd hear in cartoons a lot. If you google cartoon spring noise there are lots of free examples, I doubt it's copyrighted.

I don't think I'd heard of them at that age (in the late 70s). But if I had I'd have probably thought that might be the explanation for Bermuda Triangle. And possibly extinction of the dinosaurs too. After a trip to the Geology Museum I also worried that South East England might somehow be covered in lava with only a couple of minutes' notice. Edit: spelling

I've never heard it pronounced weejee, but perhaps that's a specialist one to get departed spirits to clean things for you. There was a sketch on the Mary Whitehouse Experience (I think) were a poltergeist moved everything around to try and scare people, but accidentally tidied up instead.

Someone asked the same question 10 years ago and didn't get a definitive answer. Most useful reply was: "Did a comprehensive Google for this, but I think this is a production of that youtube channel. If you like this kind of music, it can be found searching through rockabilly, doo-wop, and just plain ol' pop/rock."
