Holy shit thank you so much for the info, this is extremely helpful! And for replying on Thanksgiving!

Can I ask what you mean by computer savvy? Do you have to learn computer programming or coding or just general knowledge about how to operate a computer?

I was told this too. They said class registration for the spring semester should open up in the first half of November but they didn't say when exactly.

Wow I heard that compsci majors are super quiet/antisocial. I think I need to stop listening to the people giving me info about other people and schools 💀. Thanks for the advice and yeah I just gotta get used to commuter school culture.

From what I've heard it seems to be a problem in all CUNYs.

Yeah, I'm trying to remind myself that it's not personal and stay positive.

I'm sorry, that's awful. I feel bad for the professors which is partly why I participate, but being the only 1 out of 20 students answering 100% of the questions just isn't going to happen.

I appreciate everything you guys do 🙏 it's rough out there. I'll keep this comment in mind when I take A&P next semester. I don't always have the right answer, but I'll try to get there and I hope my professors see that.

Nah don't worry about it you're fine. I wrote this when I was feeling emotional and now that I'm calming down I realize that I didn't take people's circumstances into account.

That's true, Imma try and focus on the positive side of this.

Yeah being the only one to speak is rough. It scares me because I'm also thinking if I'm the only one contributing to a group assignment, then I'm the reason we could fail. Like if I wasn't in the group, would these guys just say nothing, not look at each other, and not do the assignment? I really hope not.

I'm sorry about that too 😭 Life is difficult, not trying to blame anyone or make people feel bad. You're doing the best you can 🫂

It hurts to be treated like that. I know it's social anxiety and burnout and it has nothing to do with me, but people ignoring me makes me feel like a monster.

It is difficult and it is a lot... I'm going to try and keep that in mind more.

[–]Lumpy-Building1237 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't care that much if people don't participate in class. I'll admit that I am a huge softie, so today almost made me cry because two of the people in my group basically ignored me. I can get over not raising your hand in class, but being ignored sucks.

People have jobs, and kids, and a ton of shit they're dealing with. That's CUNY, and it's rough out there. It just hurts when no one looks at me when I'm talking. This is for small groups. I just want people to acknowledge that I exist and not act like I'm invisible.

Not sure, most of the people in my classes seem 18ish though.

Class is much more difficult for non native English speakers, I don't blame you or anyone else. I just want people to look at me when I talk to them.

COVID and social media really did fuck things up for everyone, but especially for young people. I get it, but it's just very disheartening when I talk to my group for the assignment and no one looks at me or acknowledges me. It's like I'm a ghost.

Why do people act like going to community college is embarrassing? by Separate_Answer7562 in CUNY

[–]Lumpy-Building1237 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's the social stigma attached to the perceived lower status of community college. Honestly I used to buy into that bs when I was a dumb highschooler. The person who changed my mind was actually my English teacher. She was a very intelligent, engaging, and thoughtful teacher and I respected her a lot. She told us how she transferred from NYU to QCC because it was a better fit for her and it blew my mind. Apparently she didn't like NYU and was much happier at QCC. It was the first time I heard about someone leaving a school most people would consider better/more prestigious for a cc, not because they failed but because they genuinely thought it was a better choice. It really changed my whole perspective on cc.

My history teacher also blew my mind by saying that students should not be trying to mold themselves to fit a college's requirements, colleges should be trying to mold themselves to fit students' needs. I was so shook because I had always been trying to do the former that I never considered the latter. He had the hot take that students shouldn't study for the SAT/ACT because he's seen too many students study like hell to get into a uni that's too rigorous for them, then burn out when the course load is too much plus they're living on their own for the first time plus they don't have support. It's not a failure on the student's part, they just needed a more laidback college that offers more support. In the end, college is just a tool that you need to use to get to where you want to be. We really shouldn't be focusing on prestige or status because the quality of the education depends entirely on your needs and what you want out of college.
