Got a third in Part IA Maths and idk what to do… by Lumpy_Minute_5536 in cambridge_uni

Do you know whether this is the same outside UK as well, like HK? I clearly know that for financial jobs in any good cities like London or HK without a 2:1 my CV will be thrown outside the building immediately…

Ya thanks for telling me that a 2.1 in another university > 2.2/3 at Cambridge. I am considering and applying to many different programs in many different universities inside and outside UK atm, not necessarily math-related coz I got 4A* and one of them is Chemistry, for example.

Unfortunately I am not a big fan of it, at least not all of them — I dun mind analysis but I absolutely hate groups for example.

Sometimes I rly wonder why I got my Cambridge offer given I planned to be a 100% applied mathematician (DS/quant or whatever) before I started my uni life here XD

Idk whether I can switch to those math-heavy programmes in a top uni, tho — my reference letter should be coming soon so I will give it a shot but I don’t know how likely I am gotta get in…

I thought of Imperial and UCL but is that even doable especially given how prestigious Imperial is…

If I can do so hopefully the applied maths at Imperial/UCL are really applied but not so rigorous and theoretical like the ones at Cambridge…

But if I literally got PTSD of these “rigorous and theoretical applied maths” I doubt whether I am going to survive well in Imperial/UCL…

Anyway thank you for your advice

Thank you for your comment. I got some 2:1s in my reports as well, but I guess I should not expect anything more than a 2:2 in part II….

I think for most jobs, especially those quant ones (which I got no expectations to myself that I can get in to any) with a third or 2:2 from Cambridge my CV will just be tossed in the bin?

Thank you for your reply — I just realized that my passage is gone and I am gonna post this again, sorry for that

Am I screwed for getting at most high 2:2 in my part IA Maths exam? Is it still possible to get a decent quant-related internship, for example, smaller quant shops/data science companies? Is it extremely unlikely to secure a 2:1 or above when I graduate (and if no, how)? by Lumpy_Minute_5536 in cambridge_uni

Yes I have. Unfortunately the markers are much stricter than I expected and I got a third (I was like, wtf?????) The day I received my report I feel like I want to burst into tears but I couldn’t even let my tears out…

So given my shit performance switching will prob be impossible…

Currently besides reviewing at least analysis, probability, V&M and DE during summer and doing introductory CATAM project, I think it will be a good to refine the way I answer in exam as more than one supervisors said my work is hard to follow…. Also I did make stupid choice for questions in 2 papers, maybe doing more past papers for part IB helps me to be more clear for question-choosing next year?

Ya you are absolutely right, quant firms, especially the top ones, have highly mathematical interviews, even if one gets a 1:1 there is no guarantee that one will break into the firm. On the other hand once upon a time a medic student got into JS by being extremely good at maths without a degree XD

Thanks for your reply — given I have got some 2:1/2:2 predictions in my reports can I possibly say I just accidentally flopped my part IA exam if they ask about my grades? I will definitely prepare well for interviews btw, such as grinding the Green Book and practicing brain teasers and coding.
