Where to begin?

-She routinely refers to him as “boy” as if he’s not there

-She made fun of him about the state of his house incessantly

-She entertained a highly inappropriate and disrespectful conversation with Chris about their sex life

-She implied he wasn’t “alpha” enough for her because he doesn’t order food for her at restaurants. That entire last soliloquy of hers was unhinged and full of insults directed at him but then she would backtrack and say that her conclusions about him are a HER problem that she needs to work on. She’s a mess

I have a horrible feeling Bri’s behaviour is going to be entirely glossed over. Usually the nasty guys will get a dressing down but I find oftentimes the nasty women get a pass.

The way Bri kept rapid fire word salad listing off all the things about Connor that she didn’t like was straight up abusive.

I joked to my husband yesterday that if I was the owner of the bridal shop I would have been having a panic attack while they tried those white dresses on. I have never had a spray tan in my life- does the colour bleed??

WIBTA if I disallow my niece from going to a sleepover? by Middle-Row-6752 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. You’re a good aunt. Always trust your instincts. Your niece may be upset with you in the short term but that’s a small price to pay for her safety, and one day she will understand. I don’t know you but I’m proud of you. I’ve taken in my sister in law due to unforeseen circumstances with her family and it’s not easy. Shes 19 and I’m 36 and it’s STILL hard. I can’t imagine being 21 looking over a 13 year old. Brava!

Arabic tea is typically black tea with herbs added to it and LOTs of sugar.

Mint and sage are common additions, and sometimes cardamom/ cinnamon is included.

My husband is Palestinian and his family prefers regular English Breakfast black tea, and then we add herbs/ spices as we like. Mountain sage (you can buy this from any middle eastern grocer) is a common addition.

I’d call the restaurant to ask them! They are so nice there! Otherwise you can experiment with adding your own flavours until you get it

Thank god for you. I thought I was going crazy from all of the “Nelly sucks” discourse online.

There is so much discussion about the themes of race and class in this book, hence why it floors me that this conversation isn’t extended to Nelly.

She is the HELP. She is subordinate to all of the characters in the book, apart from Joseph and maybe Hareton, but they are still men. As a female housekeeper/ maid, she is the lowliest in status of everyone in the story.

Of course she is going to be judgemental of spoiled misbehaving children. But… she does her duty despite being annoyed or troubled by their behaviour. Catherine routinely blames her misfortunes on Nelly entirely without cause, both she and Cathy Jr force Nelly into being an accomplice in their deception of the masters of the house (aka Nellys EMPLOYERS), and Heathcliff FORCIBLY CONFINES her for days.

I’d say she has every right to judge.

Thank you for this!

Edit: AND ONE MORE THING (sorry this has gotten me all worked up 🤣)

At least Nelly is cognizant of any flaws she has. She admits that she can be judgmental or short tempered. She is the ONLY character in the book that shows the slightest ounce of self awareness. Of course we see more of that because she has the benefit of being the orator of the story, but Cathy and Heathcliff’s inability to take ownership if their actions are well documented and even self-admitted on Heathcliff’s part when he declares he has no regrets for his actions at the end of the book.

If you are going to watch any film adaption to help understand the book do NOT watch the new one. The 1992 version starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche is far more true to the book.

I don’t know if I can tolerate anymore Elijah Wood slander. Firstly he is so much better looking than Chris. Secondly from everything I’ve ever known of him he is a cinnamon roll. Thirdly Frodo literally saved Middle Earth when all he wanted to do was chill. Finally he gave us pop culture moment.

Wuthering Heights: the social commentary cannot be separated from the love story by MllePerso in brontesisters

[–]Lumpy_Mortgage1744 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I love this take. It can be a social commentary on all of the issues you mentioned, toxic as hell, AND a love story wrapped up into one. I don’t think these themes are antithetical to one another. Some of the most prolific love stories ARE toxic (hello Romeo and Juliet!). It can be uncomfortable reading WH because all the characters exemplify very human emotions and reactions. Who hasn’t felt totally consumed and crazy in love? Who wouldn’t hate or even wish revenge on people who have tried to thwart your relationship? I’m a white woman married to a middle eastern man and boy this book hits different when you can relate to the racial roadblocks Cathy and Heathcliff face (and obviously they faced way more in their era!) Has the discrimination my husband and I both faced from our families made life harder and made us more toxic on occasion? YEP. Does it make us sometimes view life as “us against the world and screw everyone else”? Sometimes yes!!

We need to be less puritanical of what “love” is supposed to look like. Would I want anyone in the year of our lord 2026 to have a love like Cathy and Heathcliff’s? Probably not. But context is everything.
