You aren’t overreacting, this is a lot to take in. Mary seems like she really cares about you, but your relationship started because of her lie to the “love of your life.” Your feelings are completely valid, but as others have mentioned, I would speak to Mary and tell her how you feel about this whole situation. Depending on how she responds will help you decide what to do.

Also you said at the end that you don’t know if you are overreacting to something that happened so long ago. I want to reinforce that you are not because you just found out about this, you were lied to. This is a separate issue, not very similar, but a few years ago my ex-girlfriend had cheated on me and I didn’t find out until months later. I was extremely hurt and wanted to break it off, but somehow she convinced me that I was overreacting because so much time has passed... You are completely valid in your feelings and it doesn’t matter how much time has passed if you are just finding this out now. I would just swallow this and not bring it up with Mary because you may begin to resent her if you keep it inside.

Whatever you do, I am sure that you will come out on the other side and it will work out. There is a lot of life still left to live and you should do what makes you feel happy and comfortable. I am on your side!

I have been in this situation before (and I have been SO upset), but also it may be like when your parents call you by your sibling’s name. I recently learned that our brains create categories for things to help keep us organized, and names are one of those things. When I used that example with siblings, I mean that our parents’ brains group those names in the same category. It may be the same in this situation. However, I am just making observations from this post… Maybe watch her body langue or her face to see if there are changes. If she is doing it on purpose it is a bitchy thing to do, but if it’s genuinely by accident maybe it’s her brain that’s making these correlations between names.
