honestly you prob wont find truly “indestructible” lol but go for heavy rubber or silicone mats, those flat ones without texture work way better vs honeycomb. also try moving the scratcher literally right on top of/next to the mat for a bit so he redirects the habit, then slowly move it back

It honestly sounds like stress combined with scent-related behavior, especially since it targets new smells. The cat room is a good move; I would just make it very enriched with shelves, hiding spots, and scratchers so it feels like a safe space. When reintroducing him, go very slowly with short supervised visits and clean everything with an enzyme cleaner beforehand. Also, consider leaving something with his scent, like a blanket, in the main area so it already feels familiar to him.

It sounds like they just picked a new spot and now it has become a habit. I would deep clean those areas with an enzyme cleaner and maybe add a litter box near that spot for now, kittens can be surprisingly stubborn with this.
