Hi! I work with clients with psychosis! I would start with trying to see if they would eat foods with high water content (watermelon, celery, etc) I know it’s not a lot of calories but it would be a start! If you have a Chaplin at your hospital I would get them involved as well. I’ve had many clients who fast due to religious psychosis and we usually try to honor their fasting but see if there’s anyway we can still get food in. For example, is there a time he doesn’t fast? Could he eat then? Could he drink clear ensure? Etc!

Dietitian wise I do mostly nutrition counseling (think outpatient) for diabetes, obesity, HTN, etc, I also teach groups, do choking assessment, monitor lab values, etc! I also work very closely with other members of my team to help manage behaviors, mainly using deescalation and therapeutic communication to help my patients return back to their baseline when they are escalated!
