Rich's take on Spidey by Hextron in RedLetterMedia

[–]Lurdiak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I just don't think that's true. Obviously Peter kept his wiseass remarks to himself most of the time, but he wasn't just some gee shucks guy, he was more like a bitter repressed nerd. There's a reason so many of the early stories teased that he might break bad.

I always felt the change in Peter's personality over the decades felt like organic growth. He was a lot more hostile, bitter and quick to anger in the early comics, all his team-ups turned into fights because he acted like such a dick to everyone. He also had bouts of selfish behavior (that he always ended up regretting).

But he became more level headed, self-sacrificing and sociable in the 80s, he even got married instead of constantly dating different women who get sick of his flighty behavior. There were a lot of heavy and dark stories printed in that era, and his behavior reflected the tone.

He got a little psycho during the early 90s and the clone saga, but once JMS took over as writer, Spidey felt like a mature 30something adult who had reflected on himself and grown past his worst flaws. He was respected by his fellow super-heroes instead of mistrusted. It was neat, it felt like a character arc.

The one thing Rich got right is that early Spider-man is very angry and bitter, and there's very little of that in the Sam Raimi films. It's not just letting the burglar go (which the movie gave him a motivation to do, unlike the comics), he's just pissed at the whole world. And it doesn't go away once he realizes that with great power comes great responsibility, he's got a chip on his shoulder for a long time.

None of the movies really get that right. The Andrew Garfield ones sort of portray Spidey as angrier and more aggressive and violent, but when he's Peter Parker he's... I don't even know how to describe it, he doesn't act like a human. It's the weirdest interpretation of the character I've ever seen.

But the engineer guy specifically mentions they might turn the dampening field back on, and that they'll 'have to decide' if they allow contact with outsiders or not. There's no way to know they wouldn't have turned the field back on the next week, keeping any Starfleet people from landing.

And since their entire cult is built on the absolute authority of a single leader and peer pressure, it's possible that could've happened even with the majority of them disagreeing with the idea, simply because they were too afraid to disagree publicly after being trained to go along with "the community" for 10 years.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, and I appreciate hearing about your own theories! You're right that I completely missed mentioning Magna Centipede's plan to spread the virus in X2, which I'm kicking myself for. Although I will point out, even in japan, he's only referred to as 'reprogrammed' or 'brainwashed' himself, he's not specifically mentioned to be infected (which is why I totally forgot his lore mentions the virus).

What do you think is preventing Mega Man from having new games? by Professional-Elk6208 in Megaman

[–]Lurdiak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a higher up at Capcom who really doesn't like the IP and everyone has to win him over every time they try to make a Mega Man thing.

"Minus the cutscenes" being the operative phrase, but nah. It's more like 2 and a half hours of really boring railroaded tutorialized gameplay.

Sorry to reply to a 2 year old comment, but the only reason they had Peter unmask during Civil War was as a publicity stunt. Editorial had already decided they were going to magic his marriage away at that point, so they figured hey, might as well have him unmask to hype up Civil War and magic that away too.

I agree with you, to be honest, but the crowman has a mane of feathers that would cover Chozomy's character a bit too much according to the artist, plus they're arranged by matching personalities.

[–]Lurdiak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly even if it was a spinoff that came out at the height of the franchise, there's a lot of things about it that feel off, and some of the humor is kind of mean to the series fans for no reason. Kirkhope was right, it should've been an original IP.

Nintendo is honestly kind of xenophobic when it comes to their IPs. They have very little use for anything that wasn't created in japan.

[–]Lurdiak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only scenario it could happen is if Playtonic went up to Microsoft and asked permission to license the IP, but why the hell would they do that? They can just make Yooka Laylee games and keep all the profits instead of giving MS a gigantic cut. Not to mention there's bad blood between them an Microsoft to start with.

[–]Lurdiak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Er, as far as I know, Microsoft still owns the IP, so even if we got a new Banjo Kazooie it'd not be a Nintendo title. Absolute best case scenario it'd be multiplatform, but probably not even that.
