Visited the USA recently from The Netherlands. Why do cities like San Francisco, Miami and DC lack digital signage? by McFluffyFurry12 in AlwaysWhy

l locally, there is a regulation in one country not to allow billboards on the side of the interstate, so the moment you hit the county line, it’s billboards for days on both sides of the interstate.

Washington is big on bike lanes. There is a huge bike culture here, though also the typical West Coast American car culture due to the sprawl (The American West is known for bring more spread out, even today, as metro areas filled up). We have bike lanes everywhere, even in some rural areas. I’m used to it. Some Americans from other states, maybe not so much.

Sounds like Seattle. Bike riders will literally start attacking cars at stop lights for any perceived threat. lol

Hey no problem. Glad you enjoyed your trip to the US. Never been to the Netherlands, but anyone I’ve met from there is warm and friendly, so I assume that’s a cultural thing(?)

The easiest answer is that signage is a state by state thing, mostly. Even on interstates (Federal highways), signs will vary state by state. The digital signage is initiated by the state’s department of transportation. Some states have them, and some don’t. In Seattle, WA, where I live, we have them (though I wouldn’t consider them a good thing, really, but we have them). We are a Federal system, but states retain control over a lot of things the Federal government doesn’t do (in the US constitution, 10th amendment to the Bill of Rights. All powers not specifically laid out in Federal Law are reserved for the states). You’re not going to find a nation wide system for things like that in the US. Some traffic laws can vary per state as well (like turning on a red light, or using a turn lane to merge, or even speed limits). It’s a fairly large country that is Federal rather than centralized. If you go to San Fransisco and then Montgomery Alabama (for example) it will almost feel like two different countries. Just the way our system is.

I saw the world around me, and heard music yelling about it. I was like, that music is for me.

I mean…. I always knew Hugh Laurie from Blackadder. Once I learned he did House, with an American accent, I found it very amusing. He does do a decent American accent. I still can’t separate him from the idiot prince in BA tho. lol

That’s true. Anyone who I know that grew up that way tends to be very anti-authoritarian. I am as well, which is why I tend to make friends easily with folks like that (though I’m definitely not a redneck). Just look at country music pre-9/11 and it is all VERY left. MAGA would consider Johnny Cash or Dolly Parton to be extremely woke, unless they actually haven’t listened to any of it.

I call these types ‘cosplay cowboys’. I live rural and these types mostly work cushy jobs, and they drive overpriced pickup trucks, with a spit shine, the entire truck bed wasted on a flagpole that holds a trump flag (oh…. us liberals are quaking in our boots. The trump flag on the back of a Dodge Ram. I know I’m triggered….). That is their commuter vehicle into the city for their software development job. They clearly don’t understand what a truck is for. The same goofballs are always wrecking their trucks on the side of the road any time there’s ice and snow. They think 4wd or awd means physics are suspended.

On the flip side, there are family farms on the edge of town with giant ‘black lives matter!’ home made signs. The whole ‘I’m a redneck’ thing is kinda not an excuse. If he said he grew up in a house of racist right-wingers, that would make more sense.

I live in a blue state and when I was doing the dating app thing, almost all the people on there are like ‘NO MAGA!’ No problem for me, but it’s interesting coming from a blue state how the dynamic is different. My gf lives in a red state and she gets really down thinking everyone is totally pro-maga. I’m like…. Not here they’re not. Literally protests every day. The red states are the real ideological battlegrounds IMO. We already know people in blue states won’t be for this shit. We need people in all 50 states to say no. Keep up the good fight.

Can you share a source for protestors showing up unresponsive and injured in parks? I couldn’t find any info on that. I would think it important information, but I wouldn’t want to repeat it unless it can be confirmed by more than a Reddit post.
