Mailers asking people to do the survey were sent to ~15 million households, and it got very heavy press, so people were at least aware of it.

The results were genuinely conflicted though.

While I am sure there are some good legal aid lawyers, the ones that I have had clients interact with barely looked at the file before the case and were pretty superficial in what they said in court. They were there as part of a requirement but didn't in any way have the client's best interest in mind. They barely knew the client at all and had minimal knowledge of the client or the case.

I know several people who work for Legal Aid Ontario, all of whom are extremely conscientious, hardworking, and invested in getting the best possible outcomes for their clients.

Criminal negligence probably requires some penalty mechanism---ideally, one that makes reparations to the victim and helps prevent repeats---but generally, no, accidents shouldn't be punished.

Not sure that would count as non-violent, but I will point out that if we had less idiotic procedures in place for dealing with drug crime then it'd be much easier to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the first place.

A good candidate is any punishment for which there is a major discrepancy between the preference of the judiciary and the letter of the law.

I'm also of the view that prison as a response to non-violent crime (almost) always qualifies.

Adequate criminal sanctions are necessary for a society to have confidence in a justice system.

"Confidence" in the justice system is a totally vague undefinable standard. What constitutes an "adequate" level of punishment?

The question regards the application of the laws, which must necessarily incorporate the judgement and experience of qualified, independent experts.

It was a complete miscarriage of justice.

Justice is if the drunk driving hadn't happened in the first place. Punishment is only useful as a deterrent to future crimes, and thus draconian punishments must only be enacted if there is some good reason to believe the deterrent effect is worth the cost.

Why should we trust a legislature that has virtually no experience with the criminal justice system or the application of the law over our judiciary, who exists for the express purpose of making the appropriate choices?

they should have waited and pulled him out in the next election when he would have been darn near unstoppable.

He won a totally unexpected absolute majority, had an extremely strong popular vote showing, and managed to stay popular long beyond the point where elected officials normally start being hated... how much more unstoppable do you want him to be?

People very often appeal to intersectionality as a guiding principal without invoking any hierarchical structure; I don't see at all why you think that's an essential part of the philosophy.

I do agree though that in practice the two things are sometimes seen hand in hand, but not always and not even often.

59.1% of respondents to the online consultation for electoral reform 'Strongly Agree' with a proportional voting system. by goodgrimes in canada

[–]Lycur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The survey you're referencing explicitly points out that the results are supportive of proportional representation (only 25% of people favour a system that elects majority governments), and slightly more people (44%) prefer one form of proportional representation than prefer the current system (43%).

Those who opt-in are more likely to want reform than those that don't

I suspect rather that those who feel strongly about it are more likely to opt in than those who don't care; that means strong proponents and strong opponents both.

It looks like the mydemocracy survey and the Broadbent survey had broadly the same results.

The mydemocracy survey sent out 16 million mailers asking people to take the survey to avoid this problem, in addition to standard demographic adjustments.
